This is what I'd pick as first choice XI, notwithstanding tweaks depending on the opposition. 4-3-3:

Aurier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies

Sissoko, Winks
Lo Celso

Son, Alli
Kane

Defence - go for solidity and experience. Yes, I did mention solidity and Aurier in the same post, but he was playing pretty well before the league was suspended. Hope Vertonghen is still up to the job (at least for the rest of the season), if not, Sanchez.

Midfield - Winks and Sissoko holding. I think Sissoko was a big loss for us this season, I think he'll give us a big boost when he's back in the first XI. Cue comments from Sissoko haters. Lo Celso linking midfield and attack. Alternatively if Ndombele is fit and on form, maybe him in that role and Lo Celso in the deeper role instead of Winks, if he can play there?

Attack - toss up between Bergwijn and Alli; Alli just edges it because of his link up play with Kane, if he's on form.

I'm actually pretty excited by how our squad looks at the moment, although obviously one or two things need to be addressed.

Feels like a start of the season without any pre-season fixtures - don't have any clue who will play and apart some obvious ones, don't have much opinion on who should.

Like Harvey Specter and Mike Ross would say, we go on the offense (yeah, I may have become addicted to Suits during this quarantine). The following assumes that Parrott and LoCelso won't be available and Sanchez is infected with Covid-19.

............................. Hugo ..............................
Aurier ... Toby ... Tanganga ... Davies
.......................... Sissoko ............................
............... Lamela ..... Ndombele ..........
.......... Lucas ....... kane ....... Son ...........

Subs: Gazza, Jan, Foyth, Dier, Skipp, Winks, Gedson, Dele & Bergwjin

Well considering our scary attack could only score one (a piece) our shocking defence can't be that shocking (or our attack that scary)

It didn’t finish 1-1. Highlights only showed two goals but we know Lamela scores and Aurier has said he got more than one assist. So must have been at least 4 or 5 goals.

If we get a Winks and Sissoko pivot, I will be joining the protests

I won’t be watching if we play with that. Can’t be bothered to see us struggle through and lose the first game if we start with sissoko in the team with all the players now available.

Exactly this, I absolutely love Sissoko for his workrate and I think he would be a great sub (especially with 5 subs now) in the last 20 minutes with a lead. His ability to track back and cover for Aurier is great BUT I don't think he is anywhere good enough to be starting over Alli, Ndombele, Lo Celso.

I agree but except for the bold bit. Remember Bournemouth at home, he almost gifted them a point with his performance late in the game. At fault for two goals.

Still waiting for Dele & Dier to be banned, so we could see a 4-3-3 with Vertonghen/Foyth/Tanganga at CB if Sánchez is not fit

I can't wait to watch a game with that front 5, but it will all be bittersweet knowing we can't defend to save our lives.
It's not even the inability to defend for me, it's the lack of pressure on the ball. When you have an entire team knocking the ball about completely unopposed you are going to struggle defensively. Statistically we are conceding far more possession, territory and ultimately chances than we have for 5 years. It's no coincidence.

I'm not saying that we've been great, but players that have performed steadily in our defence for years didn't become awful overnight.

That squad needs to play on the front foot, we just dont have the players to play any other way and certainly not the way that Jose has been asking them to play. Not that I can work out exactly what that is!

Absolutely huge loss. People can criticise all they like, he was immense for us. We really missed his drive, commitment and athleticism. He singlehandedly drove us forward so many times last season.

Be great to have him back. Is he fit?

In effect a 3-2-2–3

Aurier will be well advanced in attack and reverting to RB in defence. Sissoko in the middle to break up play and cover Aurier. Lo Celso as our deep lying playmaker with Ndombele in an advanced position. Bergwijn and Son providing both width and pace up top alongside Kane.

subs:

Gazzaniga, Davies, Sessegnon, M-Walcott, Skipp, Winks, Gedson, Lamela, Moura
