Grateful Sunderland fans have raised more than £1,100 to buy flowers for their returning manager's wife.

Dick Advocaat changed his mind about staying in charge of the club.

He had said that he'd leave at the end of the season because his wife wanted him to retire.

But after the 67-year-old helped them to Premier League safety, and pressure from fans and chairman Ellis Short, he decided to stay in England for another year rather than go home to Holland.

Grateful Sunderland fan Tom Sproates set up a GoFundMe page for online donations for his wife, which topped £1,100 six hours after being started.

It's now at more than £1,600.

Fans said it was set up by a user of the Sunderland Message Board "to give Mrs Advocaat a big thank you for giving us another year of the little general".

Supporters said anything over £150 would be split between the SAFC Foundation and a charity of her choice.

Sunderland fans were praised last year when they set up a similar fund for John Alder and Liam Sweeney, fans of rivals Newcastle United, who were killed in the MH17 air disaster.

Originally set up to buy floral tributes, online donations reached £33,000.

Naaawww. Newcastle could learn a thing or two from their neighbours.
