Worth remembering Devine is a year younger than Chukwuemeka.

He's the one we should try and get out of Villa. Only a year left on his contract and refusing to sign another one. Bung them £10 million and see what they say. He's got it all.

I agree. It is really disappointing to see kids we have nurtured and developed going elsewhere for the money. The irony is that often we sign these players from smaller clubs eg Meghoma who I believe we signed from Wycombe a few years ago. He came to us no doubt because of the better facilities and coaching. It is said they are second to none. However we don't seem to match the money available at other clubs and I think it is unreasonable for us to expect the cream of schoolboy footballers to sign for us for less money than is available at other clubs, unless they are really dyed in the wool Spurs fans.

Going back a long way to the 50's and 60's there was a growing culture of paying money for the best schoolboy stars when at the time it was illegal. Jimmy Greaves was expected to sign for us as an apprentice but ended up at Chelsea allegedly because their chief scout paid his father to allow him to sign for them. In the 60' s we had the England schoolboy captain David Price training with us but he chose to sign for Woolwich allegedly for the same reason.

We had a series of notable schoolboy signings in the 80's eg Shaun Murray, Ally Dick, the Vietnamese kid whose name I can't remember. Did our policy change. You can only speculate.

Any way the point is very few of the really top kids these days will sign for a club just because of the facilties and coaching as we are finding out.
Shaun Murray.....what a player he might have been. Saw him playing for England v Scotland schoolboys at 15yrs old. Looked like a cross between Hoddle and Bryan Robson. Couldn’t fail.
Well he did. Never played in the first team, went to Portsmouth and ended up at Notts Co. and Scarborough. Looked like he never really grew much from 15yrs old.

If we could do what Barca do and promote one academy graduate in to the first team squad each year, I think it would show a sign of wanting to nurture our own.
The difference is that Barca has an academy that most youth players would dream to play for in Spain (outside of Real Madrids) so they can take their pick of the top prospects and they also have a B team playing in the professional leagues and playing getting practice at men's level.

But I agree with the sentiment

He was good in the opening games but largely anonymous against Italy in the semi final. Apparently he's very good friends with Scarlett but I still believe he'll end up in Germany If I recall he was born in Austria.

From Craig Hope: Newcastle will sign Jordan Hackett from Spurs on July 1. The 18-year-old left-back has represented England at youth level.

Any news on West Ham's Sonny Perkins? They wanted him to sign a new contract but he refused. His contract is up today. We are one of several clubs wanting him. He's represented England at various levels and has also made a single appearance for West Ham. He's a number 10 and highly rated. Sonny has a famous auntie - actress Louise Lombard. You may not known the name but you'd recognise her.

I know the name. When she was fresh out of drama school, I cast her as the female lead in my graduation film from film school. Day before we were due to start filming, her agent called to say she had taken a paid job instead. Bastard!

I’d like to say that that was her loss but she went on to become a fairly well known actress while I turned out to be hopelessly unsuited to working in the film industry.

Added point of interest, the male lead in my film, David Bower, subsequently starred as Hugh Grant’s deaf brother in Four Weddings.

Anyway, where were we? Oh, yes, Spurs Youth…….
