NDombele for me but it was a close call with Lamela who had one of his best games for us. He released the ball much quicker than he normally does. NDombele gave us a glimpse of what he can do for us. He was very disciplined in the midfield pivot alongside Lo Celso in the second half.
Berwijn was disappointing and I was surprised when Dele was hooked instead of him. Dele tried hard but he looked a little leggy to me(?).
Should have had the game down up by half time. Made loads of chances but didn’t take them.
Bemused as always at all the negative views about Winks(and to a lesser extent Davies). He’s asked to play an unspectacular role - to shield the back 4 and recycle the ball to NDembele and Lamela so why does everyone demand a spectacular performance from him. He carrys out the remit he’s given and works hard, always putting in a shift but every misplaced pass is jumped on to demonstrate that he isn’t good enough. Kane missed a sitter of a header so obviously he’s not good enough!
It’s just boring that every season there’s one or two players(nearly always one of them is home grown) who get scapegoated every game regardless of their actual overall performance. There’s too many people on here who think the team should be full of superstars when in reality all great teams are made up of star players and water carriers- players who work hard to try a make a platform for the stars to shine. So give players like Winks a break. He works hard for the team and if everything he tries doesn’t come of we’ll just accept it. Even stars like Kane and Sin miss sitters.

Totally agree with your point about Winks. He is doing what we is being asked if him by Mourinho but is getting slated. Yet if you say anything about the manager you get slated.

Really pleased to see NDombele get 90 mins. I think with him this has been very badly mismanaged. He should be getting 90 mins more often to force him to get match fitness. He is too good a player to leave on the bench.

GLC is just a class act. With him in the team we actually look like we want the ball, which also makes me worry as we are over reliant on him to make the midfield work. NDombele and Winks need to be able to do what he does. We know Winks can do it, we have all seen it before he had his big injury

That performance against that standard of opposition = none deserved for me. Sloppy with and without the ball, with some seemingly unwilling or unable to grab the opportunity. Love Dele but his body language is all wrong. Depressing to think that we will likely need to go full strength in this and the League cup.

No need to be so elitist. The opposition was fine and they played a good game.

He overhit several passes (including whacking them to players a short distance away which made their control more difficult)

I've noticed this about TN, but I do believe a large part of this is the players around him getting used to it. He regularly plays passes that literally nobody was expecting. Once our forwards learn to expect them, we'll see the true value of the player.

Whilst the second half was extremely promising from Ndombele, had any other player put in that performance they would have probably scored a 7. It's just a combination how difficult things have been for him and how keen we all are for him to succeed.

Once again Gio came on and transformed our side. Kane and GLC coming on seemed like a cheat code for this game such was the impact it had.

Personally I'd give the MOTM to Son who sealed the game with a tidy finish and a great cross to Harry. I can see why bullet only had him in the second tier of his ratings but that shows you the level of expectation we all have of Sonny now. He was involved in all 3 goals! I totally get voting Ndombele for another promising step towards getting his Spurs career going though.

Quick note on Lamela. I thought he had a good game tonight and would have him down to start on Sunday if he recovers well from the 90 tonight.

Its been said that Moura is an impact player yet when he starts or comes on as an impact player he in fact has little to no impact .
Lamela always but always affects games more so when he comes on as a sub he seems to give a heartbeat to the team when they have been flat and as for those who want him gone I can only say " are you mad " ?

I agree about Lamela but I actually thought Lucas did well when he came on yesterday. His ability to shoot got us out of the shit (when it rebounded to Son).

We won't get away with playing so lethargically against better teams.
Little pace, slow transition ineffective against teams that don't press or even come to play.
Ndombele(7+) improved over the game and lasted 90 minutes.
My MOM only because he invariably heads towards the opposition goal and his passes are 'snappy'
if not always accurate
Lo Celso(7+) as usual injected some pace and urgency.
Son(7) with two assists and a goal must be up there somewhere.
Lamela(7) found space worked willingly and scored.
Dele had a good half. Harry K missed one scored one and looked the business when he came on.

As with Loko they snatched a goal.
All these teams have an individual or two who can turn a game.
We need to impose ourselves from the start and not give them any hope.
That includes Chelsea.

Your comments about Winks were particularly valid for last night's game. Without Hojbjerg in CM, Winks will have to be even more conservative in possession, to avoid leaving space in behind and to balance out the risks taken by the players around him (e.g. Ndombele plays relatively high risk forward passes - a good thing, but we can't have all our CMs andCBs doing that every time they get the ball).

That's really not the case. I'm actually in the camp that would like to keep him as back-up (assuming Doherty actually proves to be better) - although I'm not sure that's financially viable. Back in 2018-19 when Trippier was off-form, I was frustrated that Aurier didn't get a proper run of games to earn the starting spot.

In terms of "always has a mistake in him":
If he was making repeated mistakes each game, was generally sloppy in his play or I simply didn't rate him, I would just call him a bad player. What I mean is that Aurier generally performs well and demonstrates the ability to play at the level we need/want from him in all areas of his game, but has a tendency to let himself down a bit by switching off and playing a loose pass / hashing a clearance. If he didn't make those mistakes, he'd probably be a £40m player.
I used to say the same about Walker (but was gutted when he left), Kaboul, Gomes (I thought he more than cancelled out his mistake with his incredible shot-stopping) and currently think the same of Dier at CB (often solid for 99% of a game but then makes an odd mistake, like losing his man on a set piece for no discernible reason or switching off and not holding the line). I rate and like all of those players...that doesn't make me blind to their imperfections though.

Aurier's crossing is inconsistent. Note that I didn't say his crossing is bad - inconsistent means it's sometimes good and sometimes bad.
If you disagree, you should go away and look at his stats compared to other fullbacks. His assist stats are quite reasonable (4 or 5 last season?). He gets himself into crossing positions far more frequently than many other fullbacks (a positive), but is less efficient with his final ball than. Trippier got a similar number of assists for us, but from considerably fewer deliveries. If you compare Aurier's assists to other fullbacks who play as high and cross as frequently (e.g. Liverpool's fullbacks) they get more assists.
What I'm not too sure about is whether the inconsistency is a result of his technique and accuracy (execution) or his vision and timing (picking the right option at the right moment). As some of his crosses are quite beautifully executed, I'd say it's more likely to be the latter.

Last season, the wonky fullback system resulted in us putting a very high a proportion of our attacks through an inefficient outlet (particularly when combined with Moura, who did not have a productive season, on the same flank). It often looked like a good tactic, as Aurier kept getting into dangerous positions, but the end product was often lacking. So far this season, we appear to be using the left flank more, which means Son has more of the ball out wide. None of that is directly Aurier's fault though...
Very good post. I do retract my comment unreservedly
Kane and GLC coming on seemed like a cheat code for this game
