Werner does the same thing drop back and then spring forward. They must drill that over and over. Pulls the player out and then time it so they are goalside but onside.

I would go so far as to argue - the run Son made was not the one Ange would have wanted in the situation - albeit it turned out well.

In those situations - ball coming in from the wing - I think Ange wants the striker to be attacking the front post - and potentially dragging defenders with him - the opposite wing is responsible for the far post, and the CMs are responsible for the space in the box created by the sagging defenders.

In this case when Son dropped into that slot - he was effectively taking up the space where Maddison and Kulusevski were covering - and bringing defenders with him.

The idea being the winger has 3-4 options - ball to the striker, who has to beat his defender to the ball, ball to the far post, or a pull back to the space created for the CMs. With Son pulling defenders into the slot - it left only 1 option - and fortunately Johnson and Werner nailed their roles.

But, alls well that ends well.

Sorry but I think this is completely unrealistic. You ate trying to create a situation where one pass is on and then you need to ball carrier to pick the right option. That happened here

Sure. That probably explains why Son, Kulusevski, and Maddison all ended up in the same space...

The system is trying to create many options - someone attacking the near post, the far post, open in the slot, arriving late in the box.

Its not about trying to create a single opportunity - its about creating multiple options, and forcing defenders to react.

It is about trying to create a single opportunity. Yes you want to force defenders to react yes, and we did that. But you aren’t going to end up with 3/4 unmarked players. You want to end up with 1, and we did

Just produces the numbers time and time again and it’s clear he’s a great captain and leader. Just so so lucky he’s ours. Face of the franchise.

Might get pelter's for this, but playing Son at striker (which is now his best position and an unbelievable striker of the ball) but the ball just does not stick to him with his back towards goal. Defenders are well aware of how good he is, no doubt, but he just doesn't offer a presence up front.

If we are playing Son in CF then the onus is on the other attackers to make space for him. Son isn't Haaland, he doesn't have target-man qualities. But Son has more range; he is a consistent shooter from outside the box.

If we want to go direct then stick Richy in CF; but that sacrifices alot of finishing and guile. It then becomes the other attacker's responsibilities to fill that gap but I see that more as a plan B (e.g if we sub Johnson in).
