Player Watch: Serge Aurier

Didn't expect it so quick, but was an easy prediction:

Serge deserves more appreciation that he gets. We've always had players in that spot that can either attack or defend, but not both.

Chances are Doherty will be no different, so no idea why people think we should palm him off like he's a liability.

The thing is, Tanganga has played about two games at RB. Although he was decent the jury is still very much out. I think we need to play him there in more lower key games before we can be sure he's proper injury cover.

Point taken, but as things stand we're headed for a bloated squad and something has to give. Hopefully Tanganga is fit again (or very soon), in which case I think he will get games.

The squad definitely needs to be trimmed yeah. But i'd be looking at the top end of the pitch more and in midfield. If we absolutely have to move on Aurier then so be it, but i'd prioritise Foyth, Sissoko, Lamela and Lucas as well as a Sessegnon loan first.

Reports a Moscow team want him. I cant see Serge fancying that for a number of reasons. I wouldn't blame him for turning that move down.

Three games into a new right back and Serge is being pined for - after how long of being berated when he makes mind numbingly stupid mistakes mixed with lukewarm solid displays?

Yeah, yeah that'll do it.

My point is I do not want him sold as I do not consider Doherty a considerable upgrade, as both have their individual strengths and weaknesses. Both together competing for the RB spot will only benefit the team. I know we need to trim the squad but I would look toward the midfield for any cull. We have been crying out for some time now to solidify the both the RB and LB and now we have the opportunity.

I'd rather let Tanganga given the chance to see if he could develop behind Doherty and at the same time move a player on who has been hit and miss for us, including one or two big games, in his time here. As a club we need to be able to open up chances for youth team players to develop - we stunted KWP and we'd be doing the same to Tanganga.

Tired of people coming up with reasons to keep around average players in this squad - it's one of the reasons we've stagnated.

Edit: My comment isn't spam, it's spot on for the most part, I tire of people handing out naff ratings because it conflicts with their point of view.

Edit 2: @Eric_s why change your rating on my original post?

I understand why we’d keep Aurier as currently we have great depth with him there in terms of experience and also players of the right makeup who’ve played at a high level.

I also understand why we’d sell as we’re bloated at CB but definitely need Tanganga getting enough game time to learn and improve (plus I think it’s highly likely RB will be where he specialises). Additionally, we need both money and non HG slots freed up, he only has two seasons remaining on his deal and while not as bad as some make out, he’s not really been a success with us but is more sellable than a lot of our other non HGs.

Really warmed to Serge over the last season and would be sad to see him go. He’s far from perfect but he gets far more of a rough ride from fans than almost any other player. Doherty looks decent but he might not be the messiah we want him to be.

I reckon people will be surprised if Aurier goes the performance levels needed to play the role.

Knowing how critical everyone has become it wouldn't surprise me if the awakening actually is Aurier > Doherty.

I'm not saying this is the case yet will have to wait and see.

He played really well today bar one quite dodgy pass in the first half, now way as bad as Davies one against everton. Outside of that he looked very accomplished, actually made 2/3 very decent crosses. The opposition were not great and he wasnt really pressured or pressed like he would in the PL but he defo stood out as having a good and accomplished game.

Tanganga will have to be really solid if we end up getting a <€20m fee for Aurier.

I know it was Shkendija, but what exactly does Doherty do better than Aurier other than attacking crosses in the opposition box? He’s adjusting to a back 4, sure, but that lack of pace and diving in against fast wingers has nothing to do with a tactical set-up. Isn’t Mourinho is all about second chances and tactical shake-ups to motivate players? I felt Aurier’s lack of competition last season made him a bit stale, but as a rotational piece keeping them both can allow them to play with full energy and use their strengths.

Well one bonus is that Doherty is far better in the air than Aurier which in means the diagonal balls into the right back aren't near as much of a problem as they would be with aurier there.
