He's being told to play as a wing-back and let the DM and CB closest to him do the hardest defensive work on that side. It categorically did not work when we came up against United, but that was a tactical failing of Mourinho's, not Aurier's fault that he's being told to play like that.
He's shown in the last few games that he's a much better attacker than we've previously thought of him, and well done Jose for spotting it.

Rose - been here 10 years, best left back of the past decade at the club. Aurier - first choice right back, won more trophies in his career than the rest of our squad (bar Lucas) put together, Kaboul - impervious for a couple seasons, instrumental in us attaining our first taste of Champion's League football, Sanchez - well established first teamer, still only 23, 2 years younger than Vert was when we signed him - the skies the limit.
3 of them were unequivocal flops, while the other 4 are either still here or have played big parts. So 3 out of 7 =/= a majority.

Didn’t get a chance to see the game but watching now. Just finished the first half and he was fantastic. Not in an attacking sense but defensively and in the middle of the park.

He was all over the pace defensively and couldn't defend a simple one-two. His recovery runs were terrible. Defended crosses from our left pretty well, mind.

I suggest you watch the game again. Our forwards couldn’t hold on to the ball for the life of them and it kept putting pressure on our defense. He as well as the others held on and allows ourselves to score late on. One of the rare games in the past year where I felt our defense out shone our attackers.
