Winks is a different player with Lo Celso. Just shows he is not so good that he can thrive regardless, but in the right setup he is good and certainly useful.

Play him next to a proper DM and he's a very good player. It's that simple.

Agreed. All of our midfielders would flourish with a solid, mobile ( doesn't even have to be amazing or world class) DM to help with the defensive screening of the back four.

Harry Winks only passes sideways

Never got that narrarive, when you watch Winks if a forward option is available he nearly always passes forward, if not then he passes sideways or backwards.

My only issue with Winks is that his defensive positioning is sometimes a bit gun ho, but he is a number 8 not a DM.

A whole team of decent number 8’s but not a proper good DM to boot.

Which is why we were trying to force the diamond but didnt have the DM as you say or the back 4 to pull it off. 433 could also work.

I think someone shared an article about how the Argentinian version of the diamond midfield has a "regista"at the base - a player that keeps things ticking over - rather than a DM. Through that lens it made perfect sense to play Winks there, but the system as a whole clearly wasn't working.

As long as you don't pair winks with sissoko he's a decent player. Sissoko spends 90% of the game at rb makes anyone with him look shit.

I thought he was supposed to be the player to put his foot on the ball and keep possession for possesions sake. When he doesn't even do that he's completely useless. Forget all these stats of his "forward passes" he get the ball so deep, every pass by virtue is "forwards" but its rarely incisive, rarely starts attacks and he is horrible in defense. I truly see no reason to play him other than giving Ndombele or Lo Celso a breather.

He's a cautious #8 for me who would be good in a midfield with a DM and one from Gio or Tanguy.

A Matic or Carrick kind of player

I semi agree. But at the expense of who? I'd much rather play Ndombele and/or Lo Celso ahead of him in that position.

Winks is tidy at times, tries hard and at best for us, will be a decent squad/bench player. Nothing more. He hasn't got enough about him to really claim a starting position in a team with our aspirations.

Much like Sissoko i'd be happy having him in the squad. When everyone is fit they shouldn't be starting.

Ndombele is never fit so a good place to start.
