Super important - such a good player

When he plays we take no compromises anywhere - his work rate is great, I actually think he's probably our most effective midfielder defensively (by that I do not mean defensive midfielder, if you see what I mean) and one of, if not our most creative midfielder.

We look a completely different side with him in the team. God knows what we'd do without him.

I noticed Hojberg loves to roll around like he's been hit by a bus aswell

I was sure Hojbjerg was finished after that tackle from Oriol Romeu. Nasty tackle on the ankle but he pulled through. He tries to be smart by going in for a tackle and faking that he got caught. Seen him do that a lot.

This guy just takes the game head on. Always wanting involved - showing for the ball, putting a tackle in, driving forward. You’ll never forget he is on the pitch.

I'd say he's our most important player - joint with Kane and Son. Without him there's no-one to drop deep and receive the ball, there's no-one who plays between the lines, there's no midfielder with the cojones to make a run from deep or pick out a forward pass (Ndombele has the ability to do all of those things but hasn't done them consistently yet, while Winks will drop deep but then pass it sideways). Everyone's raving about Kane's assists against So'ton but I think Lo Celso had the pre-assist for 3 of the goals (2 excellent passes between the lines to Kane and a great long ball to Lamela) and those were almost as important. He made the difference on Sunday and I think it's no coincidence that we were terrible against Everton without him on the pitch.

He's the glue that ties this team together and simultaneously a metronome, a creator and a tenacious tackler. I fucking love the guy and think he's gonna have a massive season if he can stay fit.

Hadn't registered his long pass to Lamela for the fifth but I certainly noticed him finding Kane twice for Son's second and fourth and that's what Winks and Sissoko cannot do - quick, instinctive passes forward that hurt the opposition. Ndombele can do it, probably even better than Lo Celso, but the rest of his game is lacking to say the least. Hopefully that changes. But Gio has the lot.

One thing that surprised me about the Amazon doc was Jose saying he wasn't convinced by him at first, that he saw him as a 'shy boy'.

Yeah this surprised me too. Lo Celso does come across as fairly quiet and perhaps shy but he was widely considered to be one of the best players in La Liga the previous season (Sid Lowe said he thought he was best player in the league outside of Barca and Madrid). Seems weird that Jose didn't seem to rate him at all initially and he had to work so hard to prove his ability.

Jose, likes fighters and that does at times backfire on him but that's what he wants

Last year we were crying out for some personality and balls from a team that was very nothingy. Lo Celso grew all the way through last year. Can't wait to see him fully fit this year.

I think he’s a proper box to box midfielder and has the athleticism to match too. What’s good is his low centre of gravity which makes him more skilful and tenacious in right areas compared to the taller box to box

one thing I really wonder about gio is his goal production. At Betis, he was nothing short of prolific in the league (9g 4a) so I wonder if there's a position he needs to be playing in or a system where we can unlock that scoring prowess.

After Modric and Dembele, this lad is next in the line of succession. That link between the defence and attack, a gritty all-rounder. He won't score many goals or set many up but we'll sure as hell notice the difference when he's not playing.

I think he just needs time and a bit of luck. He's had a fair few shot's fly just past the post and he was adapting to a new league/missed half of the season. I'd expect him to get around 5/6 goals and a similar number of assists, even as a CM.

100%, been saying this for a long time. His movement and build aren't the same, but I think his skill set (and 'game') is very similar to modric's. Very fortunate to have him and a great signing. I think we've got slightly lucky with his versatility, pretty sure he was bought as the more offensive player and ndombele the dembele replacement.

Well I would think that he maybe wasn’t considered for the central midfield role and Jose thought he was a much more attacking player (which he has shown to be good at too). But we needed someone in the middle and Gio really impressed. Maybe Jose just didn’t know he had that in his game.

Surprised me as well. If he cant see he's a fkin good player within 30mins of watching him then I have to question wtf he's looking at.
But Mourinho isn't, and never has been, overly fond of ball players imo. Alli is the latest to be thrown to the wolves. Chelsea hoofed the ball up to Drogba for years. The media had a wankfest over it but personally I've always found JMs prefered style of football awful.
