Not a top class CD. Never was, never will be

From the day we signed him he’s never attacked the ball in the air very well. Can’t teach that!

Jack of all trades. Will be 27 years old in January. Does anyone still see him developing into a quality CB? Not me.

The man is a liability, Calvert was mugging him without even trying. He is far too lackadaisical, so slow, thinks he has all the time in the world like hes playing a training match with a youth team.

I’m not gonna be all over him, i think he will get better if he plays 40+ games at CB this season, but the errors in concentration like today have been there for years. I remember the crucial 1-0 loss at home to Leicester in 2016 where he let Huth get a run on him. Doesn’t learn.

He should’ve done better on the goal but equally I actually though if Dier, DCL and Alderweireld, Alderweireld had the easier job of getting his head to the ball. Dier list his man but where the ball was headed by DCL was right where Toby was waiting in stasis.

Apart from their goal he was very commanding and dominant in the air.

Such a shame with Dier that he does so much good but there always seems to be a laps in concentration at the vital time.

Whether it’s the first game back after lock down and completely bossing martial and Rashford, only to give that silly pen away on Pogba.

Today was no different, crashing header challenging Mina in the first half then could do so much more vs DCL.

Will Dier always be that defender? One momentary laps and that’s what he’ll be remembered for. Big Tony Gardner was the same. Faultless for 89 minutes then...?

Like I’ve said previously, any decent striker with a bit of pace or heading ability is rubbing their hands together when they see Dier starting. A few years ago we were confident when Toby and Jan we’re starting together, they rarely got turned over. Dier gets turned over almost every game, it’s just a matter of if the player who turns him over converts the opportunity.

Until he learns to focus for 90 minutes he will never be a quality starting CB and he needs to learn fast.

Agree. I judge a CB on how confident I feel watching them, peak Toby and Jan with Wanyama and Dembele in front I was never worried, Dier at CB makes me nervous, just don’t think he’s a top top class player he’s a mid table CB. He’s a good character but we need an upgrade.

Dier is another one of those in the side living off years gone by, there’s a reason why every time he gets in the England squad people wonder why. He’d be squad depth for every team we’d hope to compete with and yet you rarely see anyone here say he should be sold. As long as he’s regularly starting opposition strikers will always target him, it’s really that simple.

Agreed, we looked very solid 3/4 years ago. Unfortunately for Dier he’s got a mistake in him and he hasn’t got the pace or positional play to make up for his mistakes. Davinson has a mistake in him, but he has the pace to make up for it. I'd like To see Toby go left sided CB and Sanchez right sided CB if we don’t bring in another CB this window.

not the first time his lapse in concentration cost us the game and we all know it’s gonna happen and happen more often. Why ffs was he picked to start?

Do you blame him being out manoeuvred by DCL more than you blame Toby for not reacting when the ball was going straight to him?

He turns really slowly, those hip injuries have ruined his agility. Sanchez is a liability against strong players and Dier against quick players. Toby against everyone and his best skill is passing.

Let’s face it, the guy is bang average. But inevitably he’ll have a decent game in a few weeks and people will come harking back saying he’s gonna turn into a WC defender and captain England.
