Ref Longtimespur There is nothing like a well thought out argument on someone else's opinion and indeed your reply is nothing like a well thought out reply.

I did actually rate agree for your post. Just noticed the bog bit and thought it was funny.
Apologies didn't mean to offend another old THFC supporter.
You shouldn't take things to heart so.

Given that our transfer budget has and will be impacted by the effects of the pandemic, I'm hoping Jose and the other coaches have spent time trying to find creative solutions in the squad and even the U23's to help build a more balanced team for this and upcoming seasons.

Might give you a bit of a run on the age front but think you're about 10 years older than I.:cautious::)
I didn't see the push and run team just at the end of their time. Mid 50's for me.

I would expect Jose to have found ways to deal with what the league has to offer. I think that whilst his ideas may be old school compared to others, he is still a great tactician. I think he needs a few specific tools added to the box to allow him to really make the most of his skills.

With all our forwards back and looking fit and sharp, and having watched the training videos with interest, I expect to see some rapid counter attacking football from us when the season resumes.

We need to play a counter press, not a counter attack. We don't have the defence to absorb extensive pressure as it stands. No point in playing counter attack if you're already 1 or 2 goals behind.

We have all of our players back likely in good physical shape after extensive rest. We also have 5 subs per match. Our defence isn't great so why not play to our strengths and go back to a high press? It makes a lot more sense now than it did 3/4 months ago. Our current strategy should be to outscore the opposition in every game until circumstances change.

That's exactly what we were doing in José's first run of games, the last time everyone was fit.

He's got a young assistant in Sacramento too so one would imagine that progressive ideas will find their way to the fore.

I've been out of the loop since the season ended and if this question has been done forgive me and ignore.

Have your expectations changed? While I don't expect us to get top 4, I am expecting us to play a MUCH better style of football, he's had time on the training ground and has everyone back from injury (right now).

I was always willing to give him until the middle of next season, but he'll essentially have had 2 preseason, I want to see us hit the ground running next season, i won't have much patience if we don't.

I wouldn’t bet on it. The highlights of the training game today looked like the same old shite - Serge up high on the right, wide open space in midfield.

Um... uh... might there be a tiny chance that highlights from a first training game are not necessarily a true reflection of how we may play or may not play when the season resumes?

Hey, I’d love to be surprised, but due to the COVID-19 protocols Jose hasn’t been able to do a “proper” preseason anyway.

Unfortunately, I've seen no signs at all that he's updated his thinking. As a tactician, he got his arse spanked by rookie Frank Lampard. His preferred style of football resulted in the development of high aggressive pressing to counteract the deep back line he had success with years ago. It remains to be seen whether his claims to have discovered and developed a new revolutionary type of football have any substance, but amongst all of these claims, IMO we didn't have the players to try to play his traditional brand of football, and yet he still set us up that way. It was dreadful to watch. He'll get a fair crack at the job and time will tell what we've been signed up for. A poor transfer window will give him all the excuses should they be needed, but an expensive one could land us in deep trouble going forward.

If the players, fans and board trust him enough to follow his leadership, he will lead us to trophies. He is a ridiculously talented manager. There's a lot of rubbish written about him, he has made some pretty ugly gaffs through his career and we all enjoy a bit of schadenfreude but his trophies outweigh the gaffs tenfold.

I've never seen him as a negative manager per se. The Chelsea team he built first time round I remember too well as a spurs fan :-(
The only boring thing about them was they just kept winning. (Duff and Robben, with Drogba were a front three that played some awesome stuff).

Inter was a weird one, an ageing team who he turned into title winners, played some good stuff (How many of us wanted schnejder?) But he was defined as negative because of the champions League final against some of the greatest Barcelona players in history. How he managed to win that game is a question of some beauty.

Then Real. Against that Barca team again. The players of that team you mention above are good but no where near the peak Barca of the time. They won the league (record points if I recall) but again they played defensive against Barca - I can't think of a team that could of beaten them going open.

He is pragmatic. He does have a win at all costs approach, which is galling for the opposition, and your own fans if you don't win but he is not lacking in talent nor is he a negative coach.

His time at utd was weird. It seemed to be the job he had waited for and wanted but he wasn't loved or trusted there and the rot had set into that club way before he joined. It seemed to affect him more than it should have done. He was grizly, gnarly and acted as if the criticism of him was disrespectful of his achievements. How he got that team to trophies is another mystery to me, especially over the team we had. And here he is. Leading us.

Poch was a genius for us but by the time he left our winning spirit seemed broken. The players seemed to play this season as if the past 4 years were luck. That they didn't deserve to win. The fight had gone, the teamwork, the giving everything, the belief was gone. For me that's what made it so difficult to watch. How could, for example, Dele and Toby and Dier and Eriksen play so ordinary when we had seen how extraordinary they could be?

Mourinho knows all this. He also knows the game has changed. He will get us competing again. The style of play will also improve as his coaching begins to kick in. I'm hopeful. I don't think CL qualification is feasible this year, think we've given ourselves too much to do but we will win most of our games and next year, you're right. We don't need much but we do need to add to the squad.
Very good well rounded post mate, can’t argue with any of that. Hope we can add LB, RB and ST and DM if needed and Jose will have some squad to play with.

The two teams starting the game appear to have been as follows.

In the home kit were: Lloris, Aurier, Foyth, Vertonghen, Davies, Winks, Skipp, Gedson, Dele, Bergwijn, Kane.

In the away kit were: Vorm, Marsh, Alderweireld, Dier, Sessegnon, White, Ndombele, Sissoko, Lucas, Lamela, Son.

Both of those line-ups were able to fluctuate fluidly from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 formations and gave Mourinho a chance to see plenty of pairings in action.

No Sanchez, Tanganga, GLC, Gazzaniga. Hopefully GLC isn’t the one that has covid he’s probably our best midfielder!

When all fit which is not often, we actually have a very decent squad, looking at this if you add in Sanchez Tanganga and GLC I think Jose’s ideal 22 moving to next season would be:

Lloris / Gazzaniga

Aurier / ??
Toby / Sanchez
Dier / Tanganga
Davies / Sess

Ndombele / Winks
GLC / Sissoko

Lucas / Gedson
Dele / Lamela
Son / Bergweign

Kane / ???

To me it’s quite simple the weaknesses are :
1. Back-up to Kane
2. RB
3. LB
4. CM if Ndombele can’t stay fit

Can we sort all of that out with free transfers? ??‍♂️

Looks like from the highlights that Jose is sticking to this lopsided 4-2-3-1, fine by me but only thing is as good as Aurier’s cross was for dele’s goal I don’t think he’s consistent enough with his crossing and passing etc for him to Basically be our main creative outlet!!

would be nice if it becomes more of a 4-3-3 as we defiantly have the players to play that way.
