I do get this and agree with it, it's more my disappointment that to be honest I was looking forward to yesterday all week. It's also slightly, dare I say it, boring to be able to guess his team selection before the game starts.

The most worrying aspect of all this for me though are the comments about not needing to make signings. That's a huge worry, we don't sort midfield out and we are fucked.
I’m seriously hoping it’s PR/media spin as Jose surely isn’t stupid enough to think we don’t need new signings, we absolouely 100% do.

As far as I can see we have 1 major problem area and that's the midfield, we've tried 4 different players and combinations in there and we are still having problems, what do you suggest?

I do think however he wants to get Ndombele in but he just hasn't been fit enough to play, we saw what happened when he came on late in the 2nd half we managed to keep the ball and create a chance for Kane, I suspect that when he gets fitter he will play more football which should help our football.
I've put 4-3-3 suggestions in here and in the Dele thread... because the way I see it is that Dele doesn't play in that hook role very well, and can't replicate what we got from Eriksen. He's a superb second striker/hole player though, but in a double pivot system it leaves an enormous gap in the centre of midfield. I don't necessarily want to neuter his freedom though, which is kind of what happened in recent seasons when Poch asked him to do more of a central midfield job.

Put him in a forward 3, put Dier or whoever in the pure Makalele role, with a double 8 either side of him. Its pretty narrow, but the midfield would have less of a gap.

Right now it's like we play:
GK
RB-CB-CB-LB
DM-DM
absolutely fuck all
nope
nada

It's been like that for over a year mate, the only way to heel this is getting in some fresh faces.

The difference is that Jose is attempting to play direct to the forwards including long balls as opposed to Poch who would play possession tippy tappy football and play in front of the opponents defence, the outcome of both is that neither style has pushed us forward lately so we need new faces.
I agree our football for the last 12 months hasn't been particularly fluid, but at least under Poch, we tried to keep possession, without the obsessive need to hoof the ball long and aimlessly that we now are experiencing.

Mourinho tactics worry me in certain games as we've already seen in Bayern Munich Man Utd Wolverhampton Chelsea whereby teams dominate press and attack we tend to have been very passive. This a typical of Mourinho

No but it wouldn't shock me if the Teflon **** had told him already that we wont be signing anyone and he's just going along with it for an easy life.
Yea true mate. It’s like when Jose said he’ll be looking to promote youth etc, Will he fuck lol we need points on the board why would you throw in young players who probably aren’t good enough? It’s all for levy’s ears, they’re playing each other.

I just can’t see why Jose would’ve taken this job if he was told he can’t make any signings and it wouldn’t make sense as stadium is up and running now and if Eriksen and jan etc leave and we sell mabye wanyama and 1-2 others then that’s a ton of players off the wage bill so I’m pretty sure we’d have enough money to buy at least say 2 top players which could make a huge difference.

when Jose went back to Chelsea 2nd time around yes he had a great squad but I think he added the following to it that summer:
GK - cortious?
Fabregas
Matic?
costa

not sure I’ve got that spot on but he basically identified 3-4 key weaknesses, got in top players and then won the league, I think as many have said we have about 4-5 glaring weaknesses but also have the makings of a brilliant squad so if we can sign say 4 players between jan and summer we could be right up there next season or at least cape able of winning a cup but if we sign no one again we have no chance with this mid table squad.

Spot on mate. Perhaps we do need another CM signing as we can’t rely on just ndombele who as you say doesn’t even seem to be fit yet.

Spot on, if we forget about the limitations of our current midfield etc the tactics do worry me as you say because they’re a little outdated and if we have barely any of the ball you need a midfield that is extremely good on the call and clinical on the counter attack and we are not at that level of his Real Madrid and inter Milan teams of yesteryear.

Fullback is also a major problem area.

Under JM we have improved as a striking unit against average sides, but against decent teams ie: Man Utd and Chelsea, we were the same crap team, we have been all 2019, so what improvements has JM done to our team as I can’t see anything, we are still looking like a mid table side. Admittedly we need to move some players out(midfield) and buy some quality if we are to be a top 4 side again..

Didn't even get a shot on target until the 96th minute yesterday. I don't have a problem with sitting back and playing on the counter-attack since that is his style but we didn't counter-attack yesterday. It was attack vs defence for Chelsea like a training session.

It was clear to see that tactically we played into Chelsea's hands yesterday and they didnt even need to be that good. They sat with 5 at the back and there was simply no space for our front 4. It was so easy for them, and that is why it is so annoying that we could all see yet did nothing about it until HT and then the game was gone. Also, I am not sure why Sess was not on the bench as we had no one with pace to bring on to change the dynamics if need be. Yesterday was so disappointing on so many levels not just result wise and for me at least a dent in Jose's armour - I didn't see anything from him that suggested he wasn't happy or knew what needs to be done to change it around yesterday. In addition playing the front 4 from the start leaves us so short with options from the bench should we need to chase a game.

Good post. Mourinho made a decision ahead of time and found out an hour before the game that Lampard countered him.
He wasn't sure I guess of Ndombeles health to slot him in at the last minute so I'd guess he went with it the way it was... Long ball etc.
But I think it was much worse than Mourinho could have imagined. He still had faith in Dier I guess but did not go with one creative player.
By the way I never knew why he wasnt a fan of Mata,he had him twice and always marginalized him.Maybe he likes physical players more.
I hope not. Creativity is important

It comes down to what style of football you like best, possession or direct.

The problem is that our midfield aren't functioning the way it should be thus looking useless which ever way we play :(

This is very bothersome. Even though the last year of Poch's tenure didn't go as planned, at least his aim was always to dominate and attack the opposition – something that I've always admired and cherished. The negative tactics employed by Mourinho is unbearable to watch (at least the last 4 games.) Even when Spurs won against Wolves I was still left behind with a sour aftertaste... This can't go on like this. No "big teams" just sit back and await the opposition. At least not the successful ones; Liverpool, Man City, Bayern Ajax, RB Leipzig, PSG, Dortmund, FCB, (Leicester), etc...

This was foreseeable. I argued strongly against replacing Poch with Mou because of his negative football, lack of faith in youth and poor history in the transfer market.

The early signs are that the first two concerns were well founded but it is WAY too early to judge. He needs and deserves the season. At that point we’ll have a clearer idea. People will say « give him a proper preseason and a summer transfer window”. But 7 months is long enough to see some progress and we’ll have a decent idea if the Foyths, Lo Celsos and Sessegons will be trusted to play the good football we should expect.

It will take 18 months to see whether any bad football is worth it to win some domestic cups. I hope Mou can get a tune out of us. I didn’t want him, but now he’s ours I hope he fucks shit up
