Lo Celso and Ndombele are so much better than Winks and Sissoko it is not funny. Hojbjerg, Lo Celso and Ndombele has to be our best 3 in CM now.
Hojbjerg isn’t going to manage 241 games this season so the big question is can anyone in the current squad be a capable deputy? It’s the one position now that I think is pivotal to us this season.

You might be right but Jose and Poch before you clearly disagree.

I just don't get the Winks hate today. He was fine and bland as usual first half. Second half he played to sublime passes that should have been goals - from his deep lying role.

And he's not good enough for the bench apparently?

How does Bergwijn escape all this futile hate when he was absolutely anonymous all game but Winks get it all? It's odd. Must be because we all miss Dembele. Well... winks aint ever gonna be that and we know it. but he has qualities that his managers' admire. It makes the people slagging him off so much look a bit silly imo.

Hopefully with Gio and Ndombele starting it will be a moot point.
1. They’re playing winks mainly out of necessity and sure they might rate him but that doesn’t mean they don’t think he can be upgraded on. Poch’s main target was De Jong and Jose will slowly phase Winks out the team with regards to our best XI

2. It’s not ‘Winks hate’ at all. We are all saying how much we like Winks, he’s spurs through and through, has great attitude etc but fact of the matter is he isn’t good enough for where we want and need to be, he’d not get near any other top 8 clubs CM starting spots.

Great lad and tidy little player but should be a squad player.

Agree but winks or Sissoko will have to do it as no way we are going to sign another DM when we are still looking at CB and ST. But agree it should be our next priority after that.

Through and what seems like no injuries is all that counts here but Ndombele completing 90mins and actually improving as the match progressed is most encouraging even if it's tempered with the level of the competition.

Home tie next will surely yield a more coherent display but like it or not, we improved when Winks and Dele went off.

It might be an unfair stick to beat him with but I don't feel Winks inclusion in the middle of the park enhances the midfield partner(s) around him and as for Dele, this has done his standing with Mourinho little good so expect further speculation on his future.
I doubt that Mourinho is going to decide on Dele based on a single match. He'll base it on how Dele responds with his application on the training pitch and during the game.

Some have said on here that he was all over the pitch, suggesting to me that he's applying himself. Maybe he tried a bit too hard? Regardless, if he's put himself about and is training hard, I expect JM will know that it will come and will reward the effort.
Changing the mentality is key for JM. If he can see that Dele's mentality is about accepting the challenge and upping his work rate, he'll know that the performances will come.

I agree with the latter but your point 2 is not reflective of how he was treated in this match thread. People were falling over themselves to say how shit he is. He wasn't bad at all tonight and if the goals had been taken from the two sublimeballs he put in we'd be having a different discussion (or maybe not given... SC match thread)

Only seen the first half, but only noticed him running to close a man down when he was shouted at. Looked always pissed off if his pass or a pass to him wasn't spot on also.

He has the quality there, just something isn't clicking for him right now. Needs to go back to basics and stop trying too much fancy stuff IMO.

I’d be perfectly fine with him in the role he’s playing if he just had some sort of defensive presence or ability. He just doesn’t have the knack for winning the ball back and he’s not very aware in his positioning defensively.

unfortunately to be a top CM you have to excel either defensively or create and score goals and he doesn’t have either... but he’s still a very good squad player and there is a time and a place for him

Good post match interview with Hart. He speaks more like one of the coaches staff than one of the players. An interesting listen.

He wouldn’t get into the side for any of the teams that finished top 4 last season, He wouldn’t get into Everton’s or Wolves starting 11 either. You are possibly looking at Sheff UtD or Southampton where her would be automatic starter.
That in itself proves that he’s not the one to take us forward In a new look midfield. I think with Dembele and Wanyama, he had the room do things but as Etheridge main man now, unfortunately he’s not the one. I like the guy but we need that little something extra from our midfield.

As you said it’s not Winks hate, it’s just the realisation that he hasn’t kicked on and just not good enough for a team with top 4 aspiration..

Yeah, it's clear we can't rely on him to drive us forward and he isn't going to be the catalyst for good team performances. He's a good player to bring in to keep things ticking over and I believe if we sign another DM he can play a bit further forward and be absolved of defensive duties. We may see a better version then.
