Nevertheless, I'm still fairly rubbish in the actual fantasy competition

Alright, I'll see if I'm up to par.

Schwarzer

Rise, Kompany, Jose-Enrique, Bosingwa

Pilkington, Larrson, Van der Vaart (v), Silva, Cabaye

Aguero (c)

Subs: Vorm, Klasnic, Di Santo, Jones

I am doing quite well. I am in the top 100 for Germany and 22 in SC league, which is great considering I'm up against some top competition.

Thing I've found is people go far too cheap with the defenders and to a lesser extent the midfielders in order to get a good forward line.

I learnt from this and won my dad's fantasy football league the last two times they did it twice in a row.

You have to have a defence that not only keeps a lot of clean sheets but ideally one who gets the odd goal (Terry was a good example of this a few years ago).

Also you needed at least two of your midfielders to be near the top of the rankings - I had Lampard and Gerrard who scored shit loads of goals and got tons of assists (I also struck lucky in my first title-winning season as made some early tweaks and got in a relatively cheap and unknown Downing who got a ton of assists for Boro).

The goalkeeper also needed to be one of the top ones too for regular clean sheet points.

The forwards tended to be the least important, you had to have Henry really as he was just immense points-wise - van Nisterooy was also good but Henry always edged it.

The other two forwards (used to be a 4-3-3) needed to be a bit cheaper as all the money used up on the above and forwards I found weren't as much of a points gold-mine as the rest of the team.

So basically my receipe for sucess was:

A good goalkeeper (you'd be looking at Man City, Man U or Chelsea or possibly Liverpool - Spurs tend to be a bit too crazy defense wise).

A defense with at least one of the top defenders - e.g. Terry, Kompany or perhaps a full-back who you know will not only get regular clean sheet points but also gets forward a lot for assists / goals (or even one such as Bale or Riise back in the day who could be listed at that point as a defender but actually play in midfield giving you the benefit of clean sheets plus midfield points such as assists / goals).

At least two midfielders who will get you regular high points - Young, VDV, someone who you know will play every game. At least one of Gerrard, Lampard or Fabregas were a must back then, not sure who would be at the moment as trying to think of a team with a talisman midfield player who scores a lot of their goals and is their main point for assists.

Up front you need the outstanding main striker of the league who plays regularly and is a point-scoring goldmine.

This would probably be Rooney as he's pretty much a guaranteed starter - the Man City lads are harder to call as Mancini rotates Dzeko, Aguero and Balotelli quite a lot so you just never know which of them is gonna play and appearance points are vital too.

Maybe someone cheap like Graham at Swansea who is a guranteed starter getting appearance points and also should get a few goals would be a cheap option.

Forwards tend to be the least prolific for points consistently.
