You could always ponder whether we would have won something if we'd had a proper backup striker in the last 6 years (to cover periods where Kane was out) or whether a zero net spend for the next 15-30 years is more important... :X3:
Why would there be zero net spend for the next 15-30 years?

We’ve always spent in the same kind of way under ENIC, new stadium or not.

Has anyone been reading Swiss Ramble’s tweets today?

Is our financial position healthy?

Hard to judge, as Levy's been buying land (for both Hotspur way and around the stadium) and planning the build since they pretty much took over (2003 ish). Let's not forget that they planned it years earlier but the likes of Archway (and I believe Ken Livingstone possibly) were stalling on it a lot.

I think we're in new territory now, at least from last season, as there's no real 'footballing' developments off-field for the first time in their ownership. We might have seen better transfer activity if it weren't for the Arsenal supporting gods throwing in a pandemic to piss on our parade once we'd finally got the stadium booked and open.

Possibly. I think that I just prefer to just deal with where we’re at simply because there’s nothing I can do to change it!

we might find on examination that the stadium was being saved for from around 2008, after the league cup. We saved £400-500m towards it which is why our loans are £673m or thereabouts.

The banks appear to have a hold over our spending on transfers - so I'm saying while that's understandable, we have to adhere to a tight spending program until it's paid off - which may be another 30 years.

We've been patient since 2008 at least. How much more patient will the fans be expected to be whilst paying the highest prices. If Sadio Mané was £34m and £140k/week and we passed on him because of £4m over budget at the time, but then bought Sissoko at £30m and £90k/week I'd wonder if that was ridgedly penny wise and pound foolish.

It seems unlikely that we'll win the league any time soon.

Current situation muddies things somewhat, and I think we've a sensible approach to this particular window ? .

We passed on Mané because of wages, not fee. That was more than Kane was on at the time and Mané didn't warrant a higher salary than our homegrown boy wonder.

It's all futile - one of the reasons why I can't get on board with the anti-owner stuff is because it literally has no logical basis - it's all based on retrospective, assumption, and speculation - so I wouldn't expect it to make a bean of difference. People will always invent a reason to blame them for anything and everything, whether it's in the past or regardless of it.

Liverpool were also paying agents more than players at the time weren't they - that will have helped grease the wheels for them.

Agreed - in an ideal world we would have started to see income flooding in with not just matchday income but concerts and the NFL but obviously that’s up the creek for now. With the extra income and knowing that the loans have been refinanced into long term bonds, it would have been easier to judge ENIC on their commitment to the on the field budget but at the moment it’s definitely more difficult.

True, there are definitely extremes but I think that many, like yourself are more balanced in their views.

And yet Liverpool are the ones with the two big trophies?
Obviously won single handed by Mane. A guy who was a decent player for a lower to mid table club. A guy who, if we’d signed him, many on here would have been questioning the ambition of the signing. Easy to look back and see it was a mistake now. If only time travel was a thing, eh?

Do you realise a lack of proper backup striker is not a ENIC fault?

So we should have made him our highest earner and paid him more than Kane thus we would have automatically win the CL and PL, gotcha.

This thread keeps on giving, every time I come in people constantly make up new inventive ways to get at ENIC, don't you lot get bored of this?

We aren't not investing more money in our team at all. Keeping our big name players by even doubling a lot of their wages was a decent chunk of change and one that gets overlooked.

For a club like us to sell just two of our superstars (walker and eriksen) in the period we did was a big sign of intent that deserves to be included when people lament that we didn't show any ambition.[/QUOTE]

We did though didn't we? We ended up spending £120m+ last season net, I think.

That's only aesthetic net, too - it doesn't take into account what was spend on all the auxiliary expenses that come with transfers such as agent fees, contract fees etc. I also don't know if the potential Gedson fee is accounted for in any way.
That's why I specifically stopped at 17/18. Since then, in 18/19, another enourmous profit has been announced (over £60m) and, together with some money that was left after all the finances were sorted last year, has since been invested back into the team (as you rightly say, c.£120m net since 1/7/19).

Liverpool were also paying agents more than players at the time weren't they - that will have helped grease the wheels for them.
I might be wrong on this, but I think we've regularly come out near the top in terms of agents fees paid as well.

We finished above Liverpool for something like 8 seasons in a row. They made a few key acquisitions in the right places and now have two fantastic shiny trophies. We are found wanting having underinvested in the team for a very long time.
