I’ve typically been attending 5-10 home matches a season for the last year 18 years and the support hasn’t always been that great at the Lane either. The most amazing one that stands out was the second leg against Sevilla in ‘07 I think. After about 5 minutes we were 2-0 down and about 3 goals behind on aggregate but from that moment right to the final minute I and plenty more around me barely took a breath to say anything else other than a chant of “Martin Jol’s blue & white army”. I had tears down my face at various times just wrapped up in the relentless emotion of it all. Similarly I’ve been at games their and thought the Palace or United away fans have embarrassed us with their support.

I get the whole tourist fan criticism etc of Wembley but it can work the other way too. Genuinely I’ve been at several games in the last 2 seasons (including last years semi-final against Utd) where there has been someone moaning about the players on the pitch and shouting loudly about the effing lack of support around them etc. The negativity and vitriol of them can be really intimidating for some and is completely counter productive. Personally I’m less intimated and more just wound up by it.

In one game this season a fan turned up 10 minutes after kick off, took his seat and the first thing he started ranting was “for fuck sake, playing Trippier again..... and the same boring crap atmosphere, don’t know why I bother coming” etc, to which I snapped “well at least the rest of us have been here from the start trying to support our team”. And he was the same all the way through until we finally took the lead. I just wanted to punch him the whole time!

I don’t know what the answer is because I’d love more matches like that Sevilla night. Even tourist fans with their selfies and fish and chips would get far more in to the match with enough positive voices around them leading the way.

I went to the away leg and home leg... the away leg was erm 'fun'

The home leg I remember, like you, we were 2-0 down and the atmosphere was unreal... i also remember saying 'man, will I ever see Spurs in the CL and wish one day we could play Real and Barca and will I ever see our club play them ever'

Dreams come true...

The chanting in the home leg was non stop to the point that even when we scored it didn't let up. I'm seem to remember it going through half time also but that might be me romanticising it!

Those were the days. I remember Bolton last home game the season before and the party atmosphere that we had qualified for Europe via the league for the first time in forever. Simpler times.

Was that Bolton game the one where the crowd sang the names of about 30 different players with the Huddlestone thunderbolt at the Paxton End?

thinking about going to Watford game, and Levy's tickets at £45 for lower tier & £70 for upper one. For a midweek freezing Wednesday night - can someone send him an economics tutorial on price elasticity.

White Hart Lane atmosphere was a myth in the final few years. We'd get ourselves up for the big games, but it was very similar to Wembley for 70% of games there. I expect that to come back after the initial excitement the first few games of having a new stadium will bring.
Up until the first Champions League season though it was incredible for pretty much every game.

It was significantly better than Wembley but I take your point that the atmosphere was rarely anything special even before the CL season. But to be honest that's true of all clubs. With the exception of a handful of games every season, all PL matches are pretty stale atmosphere wise nowadays
