Our season's over. One can, of course, always hope that Benfica will get a couple players sent off on Thursday, but we'd probably wouldn't make it past the quarter finals anyway. With 8 games remaining in PL, I've seen many people state that they want us to end outside the top 6 to avoid EL next season.

Personally I couldn't disagree more. First of all, I want to see Spurs do as well as possible, and 5th is a lot better than 7th, and for Man Utd to reach us we would have to lose games. We are, of course, going to do so, but hoping for a bottom 14 finish means hoping that we lose games, and I just can't do that.

Secondly, EL is a good opportunity to win a trophy. The sceptics will probably say "we won't win it anyway", and bearing our latest efforts in mind, that may be true, but with LVG as our manager, I think we have a very good chance of winning it. LVG would also want as many opportunities as possible to win trophies, and I think EL participation would strengthen our chances of getting him.

Thirdly, and this is a point most people seem to forget, EL participation boosts our UEFA coefficient. We want to play in CL, and to be prepared for CL we need a high UEFA coefficient. I don't want us to go out in the group stage because our seeding is shit and our opponents are too good.

Yes we should qualify for next year. Why? It offers another avenue into the Champions League from next season.

We should qualify, but not take it seriously. It's good for returning players, and youngsters. It is too much of a lottery to win. We should concentrate on the league.

If we're in the same situation next year as we are now (basically not getting 4th and still in EL) then go all out as winning means getting a trophy and as well as CL qualification.

Winning the league? Or top 4?

Because if the former, i could be convinced to agree.

If the latter ... why?

The more matches we have to play, the more chances it will be for LVG to refine our playing style, getting ready for mounting a serious challenge on top 4 the season after. Hope Levy will play ball.

We must make sure we hold onto fifth and get a EL spot.

Are we that special that we can dismiss a competition which offers the chance to win a trophy? With the emergence of Liverpool this season there is some serious competition ahead of us in the EPL and I for one can't see us making the CL any time soon.

Yes I agree if we are in our current position.

That was said about 40+ years ago.

21 extra games to win it......too many.

Not sure what it is for CL?

It's all about money, each league position gives about £700k the last I saw, and I think we will have a better chance of coming in the top 4 than winning EL. Playing in EL is bad for league form, it's a no brainer for me.

One bad game in EL can ruin a cup run, you can recover that in a league.

Hopefully we'll get to play some pub team in Turkmenistan, and then play Liverpool away on the following Sunday.

Despite the benefits of being in the competition, and I accept there are many, I think year out could do us some good. We would be more or less free to concentrate on the league and over recent years we have produced our best form when we have not been distracted by European football. A good, promising league campaign and then we can go again. I don't think Liverpool would be having the season they are having if they were in Europe.

He certainly did not have the europa in mind when he said that.

Having said that, I feel the europa is better than nothing.
As long as we play a sensible weakened young team in the league phase,
then the competition does get more interesting in the knock-out phase.

It is unfortunate that the benfica tie - which is a first rate match imo, has come in the middle of the make or break part of our domestic season. If we had built up a bit of reserve by beating the domestic teams we should have beaten and avoided the humiliations, then the first leg would have been worthy of our full attention.
As it was, in the middle of 2 must win games against chelsea and arse, I really could have done without it.

Pro's of finishing 5th;

- European football once again
- Increased prize money
- Helps our European coefficient
- Enhances profile and lure to managerial candidates and potential signings
- Champions Leage berth for winning Europa League
- Chance to utilise squad
- Finish above Manchester United for the first time in donkeys!
- Another chance to win a trophy, a European one at that!

Con's;

- Increased travelling
- Increased fixtures
- Less time to prepare for weekend matches
- Less matches on Saturday 3:00

Each to their own but I'd still much rather finish 5th and find the pro's much more compelling - that's my onion anyhow.
