Couldn't agree more and I've been saying it for some time. I think it's disgraceful the abuse he receives on here, yet Avb is almost revered by many on this site.

There is no doubt that he is a limited footballer and that his one major strength (dominating in the air) is on the wane but you would think he's Titus fucking Bramble the way some go on.

Some will just blame him regardless, even if others are clearly at fault. He also gets us out of trouble at times but it's never acknowledged.

The trend on here though is to pick a few players, usually Dawson and Lennon and slate them whilst ignoring other players glaring weaknesses. It makes the match thread almost unbearable at times. Too late to change it though.

The thing is, with Verts most likely leaving and Kaboul being a sick note , we will need Dawson as back up because there is no way we'll be buying 3 CB's.

Lot of CB's have come and gone, yet nobody has ousted Dawson from his place in the team, says it all really. Maybe those who are so quick to have a go at Dawson should turn their attention to the people running the Club (Manager, Chairman, DOF) and ask why a better player has not been signed.

We have signed better players though, but all of them have been crocks to go along with our other outstanding crock of a CB. Of course that is almost entirely also at the feet of the management.

If we're talking about CBs getting way more flack than they deserved then I think people should remember the shit that got thrown at Bassong when he got ostracised by Harry for no particular reason at all.

Seems people have already forgotten that Dawson was our best player vs Cardiff
That's about his standard. Just like Caulker. However when they come up against better teams it's embarrassing. He deserves respect because he cares about the club and always gives his best. Unfortunately his best is not good enough. Thanks for your services Mr Dawson but kindly close the door behind you and don't forget to take Rose, Fryers and Naughton with you. If you have space in the boot you can also take 'badman' Lennon, you get me!

The answer to the thread is no. Any SC member who pulled on a Spurs shirt would play with passion and "put their body on the line" but if they didn't have the talent they wouldn't deserve anyone's respect as a member of the Spurs team.

Personally I'm still irked he turned down a move to QPR and stopped us getting 9m for him because I think we'd now struggle to give him away on a free given his current form and his wages.

How convenient? Vertonghen has been as bad as Dawson in the thrashings this season, if not worse.

How about Vert has been injured for weeks and looks like he's disheartened with the team. You can question his desire but not his ability. Do you see Dawson being linked with Barcelona? Maybe your getting confused with Barnsley?

I'm certainly not irked considering Kaboul got injured for the entire season and we required Dawson to play in 27 league games.

Yeah, what a ****. He should be like all the other mercenaries and flakey prima donnas who throw their toys when they're not in the team. That would be far better.

There's a very good reason why Dawson has been involved at a top premier league club for several years, are you honestly trying to tell me that Dawson has fluked lasting this long? Or he's just been kept because he's a nice fella and tries his best?

Whilst his attitude/personality has no doubt elevated him at the Club, there is no way he would of lasted this long at this level if he's as bad as being claimed on here.

Its absurd.

The truth is he is quite limited but he's still a capable CB at this level, premier league standard etc....knows the Club well and represents it very well when called upon.

So for me, he can provide good cover and is a good pro to have about the place. I'd imagine he's the type of guy to always make new players feel very welcome, probably whole load of things he does behind the scenes that we don't know the half of either.

Obviously those who resort to vile insults (which to be honest, I haven't really seen that much of) are not putting their thoughts across in a very constructive way and you can certainly call it disrespectful given they're talking about our club captain and long time servant of the club. But most of the stuff I see written about him is fine.

Poor Vertonghen- must be so difficult to play football because he's linked with Barca

It may sound strange but I wish he was a bit more passionate.
That's because I think he has everything that John Terry has but for that extra bit of passion that means Terry's able to dig down deep and do the dirty things, if necessary.
What I mean is, if you ask around any football supporters, I bet they'd all say Dawson was a top bloke. Ask them about Terry, regardless of his dodgy off field antics, and I bet you'd get a very different answer. Yet, ask them honestly, who they'd rather have had in their team for the last 10 years and I bet the vast majority would plump for Terry.

He deserves more credit for his play (although every time i see him in the team sheet i cringe) but there's no way in hell he should be captain.

Sorry, just voicing an opinion. Just think he takes a lot of abuse, I wasn't implying nobody should criticise, of course not. But like with most things, its how some make their point.

All I was pointing out is that he should be treated with a bit more respect but maybe I shouldn't of started a thread on such. Didn't want to annoy people over it.

Apologies.

Maybe next time just make a big poster declaring your love for Dawson and tape it to your cousins TV instead of starting the millionth "Dawson is a bit shit but he's a great bloke" thread on here ?

I just ignore most on here when they bang on about Dawson tbh. He certainly has his faults but people will take every chance they get to put him down in any way, even if he's not the subject of conversation.

And BC stop being a ****, there are other ways to voice your disapproval of this thread without sounding like a sarcastic twat.

Don't think he is good enough for our aspirations anymore but we seriously need players with passion for the club, I would like to see him finish his career here (que the WTF rating) only as a 3rd or 4th choice(especially if our first choice pairing stays fit) and think he is capable of that role for a few more years, perhaps until we qualify for the champions league.
Also there's been rumours Kaboul is retiring at the end of the season and Vertonghen looks like he is desperate to leave, i dont think it would be a good idea to sell Dawson as we would need to buy 3 new cbs which could leave us struggling next season

EDIT: Realised that didn't really answer OP, definitely think he deserves a lot more respect then a lot of fans give him. I imagine a lot of the team respect him aswell? I'll always respect someone who puts 100% into the club, however come next season he should not be a starter. I also think he is a quite a good defender if we were to play a deeper line but this seems to be unlikely but basically i definately think he has his future uses for us.

The question isn't whether he was at some point a centre half of premier league standard but whether he currently is. I'll grant you he once was although I think he was always a beneficiary of playing alongside a King or Kaboul. Does this mean he deserves respect ? No. Appreciation for his passion ? Sure.

Is he currently premier league standard ? Absolutely not. Not just because physically he has deteriorated but because very few teams now play with immobile tall players and that was Dawson's strength, he is shambolic against the likes of Aguero, Sturridge et al who represent the more mobile striker now favoured.

As to the whole "he's a great bloke so lay off and show some respect" I'm sorry but this is as lame an argument as the one espoused to keep Lennon in the team because he is a winger who is great at defending.

Despite being dropped as captain and told he could leave the club, he chose to stay and fight for his place, citing his love of the club.
How could anyone in their right mind. slag this man off?
But . . he should be used as cover only.

People question his ability because some players play to the highest standard they can regardless of what is going on around them.

Im sorry but anyone not playing to their full potential should be ashamed. If you try your utmost and still fail i will have respect for you. But if you don't give everything despite being disheartened you don't fully deserve anyones respect.

EDIT: Being able to do so is a skill and a good quality. So one can question his ability in those respects

Great attitude and i think he bleeds blue and white. I like him!

Gets piloried on here for no reason other than the lemmings can't think for themselves. Yes he is slow but not even half as bad as some people make out.
