Maradona did everything Messi did and more, whilst smacked off his tits for a decade. Imagine if El Diego had been clean and had the support Messi has had since he was 16.
And imagine if Messi had played in an era where international football was far less competitive outside a few big nations.

The what if comments are not overly relevant, the discussion is about who is better/ has achieved more, not who could’ve been better on a level playing field as that leads to hypotheticals. We should only deal in fact when assessing these things. Maradona was an incredible player who achieved amazing things, but Messi has set a completely new standard and over a longer sustained period.

I do believe Lewandowski should've won this year and last year, why they dropped it last year I have no idea, but this idea that Messi's had a shit year just doesn't even slightly hold up.

I'm not a fan of individual awards in football at all but my top three would've been Lewandowski, Messi, Salah in that order.
