Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to Tottenham is now one step away to become a done deal. Personal terms agreed and last details between clubs then it’ll be completed. €17M to Southampton. Inter still in talks with Spurs for Ndombele - but the agreement is not even close yet

Just curious, he has very good passing stats yet those saints fans say he gives it away as often as he retrieves it. Hmmmm not sure those two things can happen at same time.

Im excited to have a specialised DM in José's team, he will do exactly what José wants him to so that's enough for me.

From SaintsWeb:

Not exactly encouraging stuff. Spoke to a close mate that supports Southampton about him before and he described him as "better than David Prutton but not as good as Wanyama", and said that they are getting a better deal if it's a straight swap for KWP.

I remember being so desperate for a DM in 2003 and 2008 that when we eventually signed Michael Brown and Wilson Palacios respectively I was over the moon, and the very fact that in both cases we'd been crying out for someone with a bit of bite in midfield for years meant that both players massively improved our form in the short term when they both joined, even though they were both quite limited technically. Maybe Hojbjerg will have a similar effect but quite frankly I cannot stand watching poor technical players that can't control or pass the ball in midfield playing for Tottenham. Seems like a million years ago that we had Modric, Van Der Vaart, Kranjcar, Huddlestone and Parker as our options.
I don't remember Makelele doing much else other than breaking up play, making tackles/interceptions and playing it simple to retain possession. I'm not saying PEH is as good as CM was, but ss far as out and out DM's are concerned it's about keeping it simple and doing a job. It lets the more technical and creative players around them do theres more effectively. I'd argue at Southampton he doesn't have the quality around him to do all the creative stuff and it forces him to do stuff out of his comfort zone at times.

JM has singled him out and let's face it he certainly knows a DM when he see's one.

Have you seen some of the absolute shit that gets posted on here about our players?

I think whenever we've lost first team players that have moved "upwards", the general consensus has always been that we're going to miss them apart from Kyle Walker because the fee seemed so high, and Eriksen because he'd been off form for so long that we'd forgotten what it looked like when he played well. The fact that so many of their fans aren't at all bothered by losing him worries me.

Personally hoping Winks doesn’t leave in face of it as he’s great squad player but he wants first team football and for whatever reason (maybe discussion with Jose behind closed doors) he is convinced he won’t get it

Well if Mourinho wants a simple, unspectacular no nonsense DM - lets hope that he can actually bring himself to play Ndombele so we can have some creativity from midfield. If that's the plan then I can get on board.

He’s saying on thing I do like and one thing I don’t like. I don’t know whether I’m meant to believe him or not!!! ?

I have seen the pass % complete, and it's not as good as out cm's

Winks 90.3%
Sissoko 87.5%
Hojbjerg 78.1%

But then Kane is only on 66.7%

So depends on how many they are trying or how ambitious they are

He plays a lot of ambitious (and somewhat aimless) passes in behind the defensive line to try and catch them out with the pace of ings/adams/redmond/djenepo, as per their plan under Hasenhuttl. It rarely comes off tbf, so not surprised his % is that low.

I would view that as being good in a lower ranking team where he won't have quality players around him.
At us players will make themselves available in better positions and he'll have more options when on the ball so that's a good base stat to work with.

(just imo) that is a shame to hear on Winks, but if he wants to continue to play more often than not good luck to him.

Have to see what transpires in the coming weeks.

Would be foolish of Winks to move on after we have finally found a proper DM for him to possibly play alongside. I know a lot in here will be happy if he leaves though. I'd like to see him stay.

I think this is our most important transfer this summer for 2 reasons:

1) It's Jose's #1 Target. We've seen what happens when he doesn't get that
2) PEH may be an unspectacular player but his value will be more to do with what his presence allows the rest of the team to do. He'll be the lynch pin.

I’m not a fan of winks but he can be a decent squad player surely if he is going that means another is coming in
