Jan Vertonghen’s agent has confirmed “the door is still open” for the defender to stay at Tottenham. The Belgian’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season and he is able to talk to foreign clubs now ahead of joining them for free in the summer.

Love Jan but I don’t think he still has it in him to compete at the level we want. Judging by his reaction Wednesday night when subbed I’m not sure he does too

I bet it is!! Jan has been great for us but sadly it appears he isn’t up to it on a consistent level. Seeing him leave the pitch on Wednesday in the manner that he did was gutting

I'd love to see him get a short contract, a testimonial and the send off he so richly deserves. However, in the cold light of day I think we'll probably part company but maybe he can get his preferred move back to Ajax. Would love to see him back here in some capacity in the future though. He's been a cornerstone of so much of our upturn in recent years. A true fans favorite.

If you want to win trophies there's no room for sentiment. We need to be ruthless. Thanks and all but it's time to go.

Who would the users of the forum most want to succeed him at the left of our central defence?

Tanganga has been playing so well right across the back four he could potentially lay claim to the spot, though I imagine Jose would still want to bring another body in if Jan is to go. Davies is a possibility too once he recovers, in that LB/LCB hybrid role in the asymmetric defence that allows Aurier to bomb on.

I think most of us would like to see this (for him to get a new contract), but sadly I just can't see it happening. As we know Levy and Spurs run a tight ship, and when it comes to a financial decision about where a new contract for Jan fits within our wage budget, then it could be a choice between a player who is decreasingly involved or instead put those wages towards a new recruit for the long-term. There's no time for sentimentality in that sort of spreadsheet-based decision. The only conceivable business reason to give him a new contract is if there's hope that we would then get a small transfer fee if he decided move elsewhere down the line.

From a fan perspective I'd love to see him play out the rest of his career here and be treated in the way that a fantastic servant to the club should be. Support him in doing his coaching training so he can take on more of a leadership and mentoring role, if indeed that's what he wants to move into.

We'd have to bring someone in to add to the pool.

Toby, Sanchez, Tanganga, Davies and one other leaves us with a strong group.

I really hoped that Foyth and Sanchez would be the future, but simply can't see it now. However, I think Sanchez with a run of games and the opportunity to further develop really will be top drawer, Foyth on the other hand I don't think will get that chance.

As stupid as this may sound, Jan seems more desperate than we do.

Do a liverpool and go for the best we can at both cb and rb. VVD has shown what happens when you buy class defenders
