"Winning" League cup semi final on away goals against Chelsea. Only the rules changed before the season and ended up losing on penalties - Spursy.

The only thing about the 'Spursy' comments (because, c'mon...that was a very Spursy thing to do') is that a lot of pundits are acting like we've been doing this loads recently. Not too long ago those very same pundits were preaching about how we were the very opposite of Spursy as we consistently ground out results under Poch.

We've been on an almost upwards trajectory for about 10 years, killed all the old hoodoos, reached a Champions League final, etc etc. Maybe on some level we do still suffer from a certain 'Spursiness' but I think there's a lot of confirmation bias due to the existence of the phrase and other teams have done plenty of more embarrassing things recently. If the word Arsenal worked with a 'y' on the end I bet something similar would have emerged when they got dicked by Bayern 5-0 in the Champions League for the umpteenth time.

Either that or we're cursed.

every club has embarrassing moments that the new age of social media super fan likes to label as bottling. Just off the top of my head Man City in semi final of champions league miss an open goal, other team go up the other end and score to knock them out. Liverpool the greatest team the world has ever seen TM got walloped 7-2 by a team who scraped survival last season, Man Utd and Arsenal - too many to mention, Chelsea who just spent £200m - go 3 nil down inside 15 minutes To newly promoted West Bromwich.

unfortunately we now live in a shitty world of Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp etc. Where all these wanna photoshop Comedians will knock up the latest hilarious picture or meme to be shared thousands of times over within seconds of the final whistle blowing meaning the average fan will start believing that team x,y,z is whatever the latest phrase is.

it’s weird I go on the general football section of an Everton forum and the amount of posts that dismiss spurs as legends is quite extraordinary. When i point out that maybe they should look at themselves there having spent nearly £500m to sit mid table and not beat your nearest rivals Liverpool in over 10 Years they get all defensive and somehow supply more reasons why we are bigger legends then they are which again is laughable.

Completed a state of the art stadium that’s was long awaited and supposed to boost revenue, only for a pandemic to hit the entire world and keep audience out.
Spursy.
Having a robust commercial structure in place enabling us to secure a low interest £175M loan to ensure survival through the pandemic.

I think a lot of clubs like Villa, Everton, etc resent us all the more as we did what they were trying to do. 10 years ago there wasn't much between the 3 clubs and in the meantime we've finished in the top 4 about 5 times, built an amazing stadium and reached the CL final, while Villa have got relegated and Everton have spent shedloads and only now are starting to show for it.

No wonder they hate us.

You'd have to in fact point to a source for me to believe that "Spursy" originated outside Spurs's fan circles. It's entirely something Spurs fans themselves could come up with. More to the point, fans who refuse to see what's right in front of them.
Idiotic.

If you think abusing your own club with fallacious jibes is a fine thing to do then we have nowhere to go from here.

Whilst I agree that we need a more positive attitude in the stadium it's worth noting that the West Ham collapse was behind closed doors which the players are used to now.

Freak occurrence however, where a combination of small errors were punished to the max, but the panic that ensued came from the team and not any nervous energy coming from the stands.

I agree. There has to be a limit.

However, we are probably the best set of fans for laughing at ourselves when things go wrong. The jibes about trophies, Spursy etc, dont bother me in the slightest because we are so good at laughing at ourselves.

But our mentality as fans needs to change as has been said on the previous few pages. It's all well and good being able to laugh at ourselves, but we should also be able to believe we are going to win every game. There should be no fear of any team any more. We are bunch of bastards. And we will be continue to be bastards because bastards win.

Agreed. And laughing at ourselves because ‘oh we get injuries all the time’ or ‘oh were one player away from being complete’ or ‘oh, ThE TOTternHaM wAY’ is one thing, but propagating the myth that snatching defeat from the jaws of victory or failing to get over the line is a predominantly Spurs trait more than any other club or level is just poor, especially when it’s from our own fans.

Handball rule changes in the following season? Spursy.

Finish 4th but Chelsea win the CL, so we dont qualify? Then the rule changes the next season? Spursy.

This is what Spursy is.

Getting the most points over a two year period and not winning the league. The list goes on Spursy isn't a mentality its fate but when we finally win something we will have beaten the gods and that will make it far sweeter.

Part of what makes people believe in 'Spursy' is that as fans we keep shifting the goalposts. Yes, we shat ourselves with lasagna-gate; yes, we finished 4th and Chelsea won the Champions League; yes, there was a bullshit handball in the Champions League final; but that was preceded by years and years and years of nothing but mid table mediocrity. Imagine if someone had told you in the 90s and early 00s that we'd be consistent top 4 finishers, challenging for league titles, would make it to the Champions League final, and in a £1bn+ state-of-the-art stadium (and training ground).

As fans, the better our club performs the higher our expectations naturally rise because we want whatever the next big achievement is but along the way you forget how many milestones we've overcome.

Sure, we've not won anything for a while, but look at where we where when ENIC took over and compare that to now - without spending anywhere near the money of Chelsea, City, Man United et al, and where similar-ish clubs like Villa and Everton have gloriously failed - and it doesn't seem so Spursy to me...

Its not so much the level of achievement for me as I make this argument with everyone who says "what have spurs achieved with al this good football, Kane , Son etc" that as long as I can see progress I am happy....that made last season hard to take but as a club as a whole the progress is still there. The spursy thing for me is the things that happen to us that are just purely unlucky and to strange to believe at times. These things are ultimately out of our control and prolong the wait for the shiny pots that ultimately validate that progress and players careers. working on a plan for a stadium for 15 years and pouring in endless funds just to have a pandemic strike within a year of completion just sums it up.

This in bold, pisses me off so much. If you haven't won a trophy you've done fuck all according to most neutral fans opinions.

I bet even when we do finally win some trophies to go with our exceptional growth as a football club and business, it won't be good enough. "It's not the EPL trophy" "You haven't won the CL yet" "Spurs have only won it because of x, y and z and not because they are the most well run club in the world" and so the bullshit excuses will go on.

We will never get the credit we deserve from the neutrals because we shat all over their own teams plans to be exactly where we are today. Its pure hatred rooted in jealousy.

Unfortunately not only are we hated by the teams below us, but those above too. We have upset their cozy little top 4 party, but not as outlandishly as City or Chelsea have done with money, but we slowly gate crashed the party through the back door.

I genuinely believe the mentality comes more from the fans than anyone else. Think you've hit the nail on the head with your last sentence there. Look at Liverpool fans. They have the most belief out of any club in the world that they are going to win every single game regardless of opposition. It's why they've been able to generate that atmosphere at Anfield even being 3-0 down to a really good Barcelona team.

Its us, the fans, that need to have that belief.
Whilst players and fans can trade off one another for energy and atmosphere I think it's bollocks to suggest it's fan's that are at fault.
I believed we would beat Liverpool in the 81 league cup final but we folded in extra time.
I believed we would win all the fa cup semi finals since and yet we have managed to lose everyone since 91.
I believed we would win the CL final when I sat in the stadium that night only for us to choke again.
The club has a history of falling short when it matters, and yet we have certain posters who won't allow criticism no matter how bad we perform.
We could lose 6-0 to Stoke in the next round of the league cup but certain fan's will blame it on the North West winds that we are not used to.
We know who these posters are, they are those in their early thirties, with dopey beards, corduroy trousers and heavy brogue shoes who drink cask ale and listen to the dusty peddlers.
Their opinion we have no interest in not now not ever.

Exactly. It’s something usually out of our control that could only happen to us. Every bad result isnt spursy.

?

Nobody is saying the club shouldn’t be criticised, they’re objecting to our own fans happily using a term that others use to take the piss out of eachother.
