Mercedes believe a trick steering innovation which could give them an advantage in 2020 is within the rules.

Technical director James Allison said it "introduces an extra dimension for steering which we hope will be useful".

He said governing body the FIA was aware of it. "The rules are clear about what's permitted on steering systems. We're pretty confident that it matches those requirements," he said

Sounds like a really good invention for the car, let's just see if it's legal!

Watching the video of it in action, it's a very mechanical movement, not the button pushing that we're used to from the cockpit. I wonder how that extra physical movement, or the change in distance to the steering wheel is going to work out?

Appears to be pulled toward the driver on straights, pushed back in for cornering?

Sounds an interesting development only trial and testing will tell if it's workable for the races.
As if Mercedes needs another edge with their domination over the last few years.

According to SSN the FIA have confirmed that this system will be banned from the start of the 2021 season. F1 used to represent the cutting edge of motorsport, but it has become so over regulated that the spirit of innovation is being crushed.

The regulations that ban this Mercedes invention have been in writing since the FIA announced the 2021 regulations. So its not like they've just reacted to the update and banned it for next year. Mercedes will have known this was a 1 year only trick.

I accept that, but it still represents a discouragement to the spirit of 'pushing the envelope' that I think F1 should represent.

Understandable, but that is always the balance of a formula series I guess. If we really did want them to represent the pinnacle of Motorsport then they'd look like very different machines, and the feature we are all crediting Mercedes for would be controlled electronically anyway. But it's all a balance between competitive sport that pushes drivers and engineering marvel.

From the BBC

This weekend's season-opening Australian Grand Prix has been postponed over coronavirus concerns, two senior F1 sources have told BBC Sport.

There has been no official confirmation as yet from F1 or governing body the FIA but the news follows a McLaren team member testing positive for the virus.

The coronavirus outbreak, now declared a pandemic, has led to widespread disruption of sporting fixtures.

We aren’t the only team to have pulled out, suspect the season will get postponed.
This last week or so has been relentless preparing for this!

Surely they just cancel races until we get to a point where they start from whatever the calendar event is when good to go. If that means only 10 races then that’s what it becomes. They won’t be rescheduling Australia.

Yeah probably would be like that, although could potentially not start until June-July time - will have to wait and see

Sad to see the passing of the truly great Stirling Moss. One of Britain's greatest ever sporting heroes
