Played 3 rounds since joining my local club (par 73)

99

Should get me a handicap of 22 ish I guess. Can't wait to get mullered in tournaments!

Might get lower than that.

If you had any holes that you scored worse than a double bogey, my understanding is that netts back to a double bogey. So a 7 on a par 4 becomes a 6, if you understand me.

Played yesterday morning. Strokes competition. 2 doubles and 2 triples destroyed me. Couldn't make a birdie. 6 over for the other 14 holes so wasn't all bad. Can't afford mistakes like that in strokes though.

Ah...ok, didn't know that. Ta. There were a few triples in that 99...! :wtf:

Currently the CONGU handicap system is done off your best round. Depending on what the SSS is compared to the par 73 (if it is deemed an easy course for example then you wont get cut as savagely as you would otherwise). If the 90 in there is your best score and lets just say for ease of comparison the SSS is 73, you do 90-73 (providing there were no triples in the 90) which would give you 17. Therefore...I would guess the maximum they will give you is 17, which is a bit lower than 22!

Strokes is such a savage method for us non pro's! Stableford yesterday for me, 32 points with 4 blobs...should have been so much better.

I usually love strokes as it sorts the men from the boys so to speak and it gives me more focus but, as you say, for us non pros, one or two mistakes and it's game over.

It also depends which tees you used. Most courses will have their handicaps based on the full men's yardage, often white tees, not the shorter yellow one so that would be taken into account if relevant ... so at my club there is at least two shots difference between yellow and white tees

Ah ok. I always go off the yellows, but competitions are normally off the whites or even the blues, which are monsters!

I think there's a 1 shot difference in par between yellows (73) and whites (72)

The verdict is in...I have a handicap of 19 :nailbiting:

Well done. You'll be fine. Just try to play regularly and you'll play to it with ease. Try to always remember when you play, course management, take your medicine instead of going for a hail Mary shot. It'll help your scores tenfold.

Absolutely! I've also recently discovered that whilst it doesn't look as pretty or as impressive, a half-decent putt from the fringe/just off the green gives you a tonne more control than a chip, and 8/10 times will end up closer to the hole. (y)

Had 31 points through 14 holes on Sunday, including back to back birdies on 9 & 10.

Finished with 35 points.

Yeah. Exactly.

Got my 4th .1 back in the last 6 week's. Back out to 7.5(8) now.

14 Points on the front 9. 19 on the back. Just can't put it together at the moment. So frustrating. Slow starts killing me.

Wouldn't mind but 3 of the first 4 holes are 2 par 5s reachable in 2 and a drivable par 4. Just need to plan my start better I think.

Not with me. I hate putting from off the green and have better distance control using a 7 or 6 iron if there is not too much slope. I can never calculate how much the fringe will slow about down but chipping over it onto the putting surface is easier, for me. I do appreciate though that most golfers putt from there but I am weird

Great advice ... if only I had such common sense. The Hollywood shots are the best just likes the thirty yards free kicks I used to try in football. Guess I’ll never learn

Actually have a chipper in my bag, so is like putting but avoids the fringe (carry 3 woods, hybrid 4,5 cavity backed 6.7, then 8,9,PW,SW,LW, chipper, putter) Played off 9 out of Woburn, until screwed shoulder up and lost 50 yards.

The scores are definitely getting steadier. I've shot a 90 (gross) the last 2 rounds. Sunday contained 9 pars, which was pleasing, but a quadruple and triple bogey...get rid of those twats and we're looking good. (y)

That must have been a pretty decent stableford score off 19 with 9 pars!?
