I know what happened, I was just wondering whether Im the only College Football fan here (go gators).

Personally, I think that the board of trustees were 100% correct in their decision, despite his legacy. In fact, his act of omission was made all the worse, because as the legendary face of penn st, he would have easily had an investigation instigated at his behest at any time.

NCAA has very strict rules (colleges can't even fly parents out to watch games), and Joe Pat is all his time has never been accused of breaking a single rule, but when dealing with something so hideous, his decision to both save face, and save the program rather than putting innocent lives ahead deserves to tarnish his reputation.

Agree. Too many "long term" coaches get comfortable and consider themselves untouchable. This is a wake up call to all now that you can't afford to get complacent and nor can you put the programme before everything

They ignore the wider ramifications of coaching at a university, in that its an institution beyond the athletic program. It's still sad to see Joe Pa go out like that, but he brought it upon himself by not doing anything.

An grad assistant walked in and saw a beloved assistant coach raping a 10 year old boy in the locker room showers. He reported it to the head coach, Paterno, who informed the athletic director. None of these three people ever reported it to the police and Paterno never followed up.

Now that the child raper has been caught, shit has flown on why he wasn't stopped and the board of trustees fired the head coach and president of the university last night.

Had to happen

Your not. I watch it religiously and I agree. He had to go.

I guess the really shocking thing about it is penn state were one of the few good guys left in CFB. Went about things with a bit of class and pride. To have this happen is not only a slap in the face for Penn State and all it stood for, but for all of College Football.

The whole thing is really quite shocking and put 'The Game of the Century™' into massive perspective.

Edit/ps. - Did anyone else flick from the LSU/Bama game to the Kansas St/Oklahoma St game? My god that was a cracker.

This isn't the first, nor last time, that a cover up has, will, happen in college football.
Star players and coaches have always been protected from prosecution for a whole range of criminal acts.
Football, is the be all and end all, in colleges, and the students who rioted upon hearing the news that Paterno had been removed should be totally ashamed of themselves, not that they will be, because as i say, Football means more to them than the rape and abuse of children on their campus by people who are seen as Gods and, in their eyes, untouchables!

he had to go, but it's just another black mark against the big ten, who were for a long time the premier conference in terms of academic standard of their scholarship athletes and quality of the instutitions...

first ohio state, and now this

just another reason why the sec will continue to rule the roost... i say this in a negative tone since the SEC are massive cheaters

penn st were having a really good season as well; but he had to go, no doubt about it

How are the SEC massive cheaters? the best are the best. I agree that Auburn for example shouldnt have taken Cam Newton, who despite his obvious talents was asked to leave UF. Florida do things by the book.

I wish there was a chomp emoticon.

Based purely athletically, the Big 10, or any other conference is no match. Whoever LSU gets in the BCS game will be destroyed. As has been the case for the last 5 years (auburn didnt destroy last year, but look at UF/Ohio State - massacre).

I most certainly did.

I got caught up in all the LSU/Bama hype, watching Brian Wilson and Lee Corso on Gameday Live was brilliant and then when I started watching the game and it mentioned the KSU /OSU game I switch straight over. Glad I did in the end.

As for Paterno he had to go it's as simple as that. A truely great career ruined by his inaction. As a man who preached making the moral and right decision he failed when it mattered most.

LSU are so far ahead (defensively) of any other team they could potentially play in the BCS National Championship Game it is hard to see past them.

I would like to so how they would stop the passing game of Luck or Weedon.

Also waiting to see what the BCS end up doing with Boise this year if they end up undefeated.

Boise won't make the BCS. Their conference is too weak, maybe when they join the big east we can start thinking about putting them in a BCS game. Luck has to get through Oregon first, who lost by 2 possessions to LSU.

This is how weak the PAC 10 is (Oregon/Stanford). LSU scored 40 points v Oregon - Oregon's lowest scoring points of the season, yet Oregon destroyed everyone in PAC 10.
Big 12 - the scores are ridiculous - they havent even heard of defense. Oklahoma St v Kansas St was an absurd scoreline indicative of their absolute lack of d.

The SEC clearly reigns supreme. It's more like Luck and Weedon has never faced a defence that's worth talking about. Look at the mighty ohio state when they faced the gator defense in 2006/7. Heisman winning QB Troy Smith had more sacks than completions in the game.

We seem to have gotten away from the initial point, a Catholic Church-style fudge on pre-pubescent buggery, and on to college football in general. Could someone explain the attraction of this monumentally tedious 'sport' to me? (Be warned, my Yank cousins have tried, and failed.)

'… beaux moments, mais de mauvais quart d'heures' as Rossiini said of Wagner.

the attraction of American Football or do you find college football more tedious than the NFL?

anyway, violence is a big part of the appeal of football. its a highly scripted, very violent game of ground acquisition.
