The game just can’t have so many interruptions as there were in the spammers v city. Completely disrupts the game and fans no longer know whether to cheer or not for goals. It is making a nonsense of the game.
Shit refereeing sending every decision to VAR. We had it in cup game last season, I forget who we played. Might have been same ref?

Like all rules the ones surrounding VAR will change over time. The concept is right just not the implementation. Give some benefit to the attacker in for offsides and understand that people have arms and the system will work much better.

Unsurprising that a game with Mike Dean descends into a farce. Bet he can't stand being upstaged by VAR. He'll probably come up with some kind of Arnold Rimmer flourish for when he does the VAR sign...

Are you thinking of the Rochdale game in the snow? That was an advert for exactly how not to use VAR. The ref wouldn't make any decisions himself and so went to the VAR basically every time anything happened. It was a complete farce.

It's madness allowing different associations to have different interpretations of the way the game is regulated and officiated.
Agreed, although has always been the case. E.G. Many European leagues add on far less stoppage time, and South Americans are a lot more leniant on violent conduct/intimidating the ref etc as they take into account the poor standards already existing there.

They checked every goal at our game on Saturday. Not one needed it, the ref could make the decision on his own. They won’t though now, it will be the same every game. I thought it was only meant to be for obvious errors. Refs will probably be punished though now if they don’t check. I’m not sure where we go with that.

I still celebrated like normal when the ball went in for our goals but I did look at the ref to see what his reaction was. I would never have really bothered to do that in the past (maybe I’d look at the Lino if I thought there was an offside but that’s it). It’s not 100% the same for us in the ground.

To be fair to them apparently they're well aware that the in-ground situation needs to be improved, they're just trying to work out the best way to do it.

That's the problem though - what's obvious to one person is not necessarily obvious to another.
As a result, everything is being run by VAR.

Was Sterling being 1mm of shoulder blade offside "clear and obvious"???
To me, clear and obvious is the goal Liverpool scored last season when Milner was 5 yards offside for the first pass.
Even the Kane goal against Chelsea was clear and obvious when the right camera angle was used.

Something else that has come to mind regarding offside is when the assistant incorrectly flags as offside.
Can't remember if it was our game or one of the others I watched (possibly City/West Ham) where the lino flagged offside against a player who was a yard or two onside. Ref blew whistle instantly, free-kick awarded to defending team.
That's more of a "clear and obvious" error than the Sterling decision, but there is no VAR in that circumstance. The player was effectively through on goal.

I might not be right about the specifics, but my understanding is that the linesman is now supposed to flag to indicate that there might have been an offside, but the ref/players are supposed to play on until the goal is scored. If they miss anyway, it doesn't matter about the offside so they just carry on as they were, and if they score, the ref/VAR know that they need to double-check for the offside that the linesman flagged for before awarding the goal.

I prefer the approach taken where they don't flag for marginal calls as it doesn't distract the players/ref. Problem with that though is when VAR overturns the goal if it is actually offside the assistant referees are made to look like they didn't spot it.

Yeah, I thought the flag was supposed to stay down until there is some form of outcome, such as a goal, and then the flag is waved for the earlier offside.
In this particular instance that didn't happen - the flag went up, the ref blew the whistle and awarded the free-kick.
TV replay showed it was onside

There's no clear and obvious rule for offsides

Before this version was given the go-ahead for use in the Premier league and English competitions (so probs a couple of years ago) the refs had to do trial days with all the different types of VAR, from the various companies offering it.

Apparently Mike Dean was a massive bellend whilst trialling it, unsurprisingly - kept giving incorrect interpretations of the law and challenging the set ups at every step of its use.
Bobby Madley was apparently a gent and really open to getting on board with the different set ups of VAR systems.

Dean is a dick. I thought he was meant to have retired at the end of last season anyway?

I was away for the Villa game, so don’t know how it felt in the stadium but I thought that across all the games I saw (Liverpool v Norwich, West Ham v Man City and us v Villa) VAR worked really well. I think much of the confusion is from people not knowing the new regulations. All the decisions that VAR made were correct.

Madley who couldn't be arsed any more, moved to Norway to be with his Norwegian girlfriend and now refs Norwegian lower league and appears on podcasts. Met him once, nice man.
