Day 1

Referee: Chris Kavanagh

TEAM FORM: Spurs WLWDD _____ Villa WWWWW

Back to normality at long last, all be it with a stronger squad. Let the fun begin!

We will start a league season at home for the first time since 2010, following eight successive seasons with an away match to start our league campaign. This is the 6th time we are playing our opening game of a premier league season against a promoted side. We have won 4 of the previous 5, with our only defeat coming in 2007-08 against Sunderland. When playing our first game of the Premier League season at home, we have lost just once (W2 D3), with that defeat coming against Manu in 1997/98.

Aston Villa will have won just one of their last 17 competitive meetings with us (W1 D3 L13); this is coming in a 1-0 victory at White hart Lane in April 2015 thanks to a first half Christian Benteke goal. Villa have won their last 3 opening Premier League fixtures, with all 3 of these coming away from home (Arsenal 2013/14, Stoke 2014/15 and Bournemouth in 2015/16). The ware winless in their last 18 Premier League away games (D3 L15), losing Their last 7 in a row between Feb and May 2016.
After winning our first four games without conceding at our new stadium, we are winless in our last 3 at home (D1 L2). We have lost 13 of our 29 games in all competitions so far in 2019, more than any other current Premier league side (W14 D2). We last suffered more defeats in a single calendar year in 2014 (16).

Harry Kane has scored four goals in 5 Premier League appearances against Villa, including 2 goals in our last such meeting: a 2-0 win for us at Villa Park in March 2016.

Poch has lost 2 of his 3 home Premier League games against Aston Villa (one with Southampton), one with us). He has only lost more home games in the competition against Liverpool and Manchester City (3 each).

We need a win to start this campaign to start as we intend to finish, especially as it is our first home game advantage for a first game in years.

12 players in and 14 out for villa is too big a change for them to be settled at this stage of the season.
They'll be excited and give their all but we should win this.
Eriksen needs to focus though.

First moan of the season about the ref. I think he’s a bit of a dunce but our record with him is ok. Let’s just hope he doesn’t have a VAR nightmare. Although I’m not holding my breath!

Can't wait for tomorrow, I was keen to avoid the Lamela is our new overlord hype due to his injury record and been here before with a good preseason but I'm all in now.

Glad Moura will get the opportunity to start also with Son missing, feel Moura will prove to Poch that he should be considered a key player rather than peripheral, Looking forward to seeing Ndombele now that he won't have been suffering as much from the running a Poch pre-season put him through.

Weren't many of them just resigning players who were there on loan?
If so i can see a fairly settled squad.

Still we should beat Villa. Saw them in the playoff final and they looked pretty toilet.

We shall see. COYS

Villa have bought in a lot of players who will be looking to impress. But ultimately I think our preparations and squad cohesion will see it through.

2-0 (Lamela 14' Kane 78')

Its still a weird situation where I'm happy with our additions but still feel that we are slightly light going forward. When Son/Alli are back, and Lo Celso is up to speed it will be far stronger. Probably says something about the confidence I have in Lamela to transfer his pre season form to meaningful games.

Heart says 3-0. Head says a scrappy 2-1

Hope we start Errecsonne, might mean a chance of him staying! Looking forward to potentially seeing a glimpse of what Ndombele and Lo Celso can do, and what shape we'll take with all the lovely midfielders we have now!

We’ll either blow them away or it will be a draw. Given our injuries, Eriksen’s mindset and TND lack of fitness I don’t think we’ll be anywhere near our best. Can see this been a tough game.

Comfortable win I think. Villa have bought in about 348 new players over the summer so there's no way they'll be fully gelled and firing in the first game of the season. Anything other than a comfortable win will be dissapointing.

Hopefully we won't have the "can't be too disappointed with a draw" merchants after the final whistle. We need a good start with a win. Anything else is gonna be a huge disappointment for me.
