Yup. In all likelihood, he either goes to Real for £40m (or so) now, or he waits for a year and goes for free

Anything else relies on him having a change of heart and deciding he wants to do us a favour. I just can't see it, which is such a shame

He won’t decide he “wants to do us a favour”.

But it’s still possible that he might decide at any point in the coming year that it’s in his interest to sign a better, extended contract. It’s not as though no case could be made for it, depending on how things turn out both at home and in Madrid.

I’m not saying it’s probable, but it’s certainly not inconceivable.

Eriksen is worth to much to go on a free next summer. It’s really that simple. Either he signs or he goes
That's just not the way this works. Eriksen holds all the cards. He gets to decide what he wants to do.

Saying he either signs or goes is completely ignoring the situation. He doesn't have to anything at all. It's like Boris turning up in Brussels thinking the EU has to renogatiate. It's naive.

Id say it is pretty much inconceivable, or as close as is possible without actually being so. When ever has a player who has made the noises he has made, run his contract down this far then signed a new deal ? Someone like Ozil doesn’t count, as he had made no suggestion whatsoever that he wanted to move on.

Eriksen doesn’t have to move this window if he doesn’t want to go to Atletico for example. Plus if he signs for them, a move to Real Madrid is then impossible.

Looking at Madrid’s transfer dealings, it’s fair to say that Madrid can’t afford him plus Neymar, plus they haven’t yet sold enough of their deadwood.

Also indicates he is way down on their list of priorities.

So I actually think eriksen will probably stay this season. I think it’s highly unlikely he will sign a new contract. If he is desperate to move to Real Madrid, why on earth would he sign a new contract which makes it more unattractive for Madrid to buy him. If he signs a new contract, Madrid will have to pay say 80 million next summer to sign him rather than nothing. That isn’t in Eriksens interest, only in our interest. His signing on bonus from Madrid will make up for any loss of increase salary he would have received with a new contract from us anyway. Even if we were to insert a clause, it again makes no sense why Eriksen would want Madrid to pay anything for him when he could be a free agent in just 12 months. As a free agent Madrid will take him just for the sake of it.

From our point of view, I am happy for him to leave on a free next summer if he gives us 12 more months. Who knows? We could win the league if he stays. I’m prepared to take the risk.

I just think Madrid have other priorities this summer and see Eriksen as a luxury they can afford to wait for.

I think people have broadly hit on the right points here.
- Eriksen wants to go to Real
- If (big 'if') they bid above a certain number, he'll go
- What is that number? Not sure, maybe 40m or so
- Under that level, and frankly we might be better off keeping him in the squad...though it relies on him being a pro in his final year
- By keeping him in the squad we put ourselves in the best position to challenge on multiple fronts, including a potentially lucrative run in the Champs League
- Very slim chance of him drinking the cool aid and deciding to stay

All bloody unfortunate though really

Daily Mail saying Juventus have sounded him out about a move next summer.

Not really news I guess because of course they would have.

That would be a kick in the nuts, considering there could have been an ideal swap deal we could have done this summer

I get that and it’s true. But I’m just saying what ITK and Hercules has said the club/Levy wants to do with the situation. He will do everything in his power to not let him go on a free. You can scroll a few pages back to see it. So funny how many actually disagrees with me

Quite amusing listening to commentators and pundits after the match talking about how we'll be fked if Eriksen leaves because no one else does what he can but completely blanking out we have signed lo celso. Didnt get a mention. Not once. Doesnt sit well with them us doing well does it.
We were fked when Modric went.
We were fked when Vdv went.
We were fked when Bale went
Yet here we are.

Depends on your definition of "fucked". We're not exactly going to finish 6th if he goes, but our ambition is much higher. We want to win the league, and when you look at how good City and Liverpool both were last season, we can't afford to lose a player of Eriksen's quality if we want to challenge. Even with Eriksen winning the league will be difficult, let alone without him.

Impossible like Marcos Llorente?

It is pretty easy now:

If Levy and the club want to aim higher and actually win things, we need to keep him.
If Levy and the club are happy with were we are and qualifying for the 3rd or 4th spot, we will try to sell.

I know the financial risk we are taking by not cashing in, but keeping him could earn you as much money as a transfer fee would.

I really hope we show ambition or at least that no team can convince the club or/and Christian.

It's hard for me to think that there can't be a win win for Eriksen and the club. It seems so simple, but yet for some reason he is resistant or we have been unwilling. Sign a one or more year extension at 200K per week with a 60M or similar release clause for Spanish giants or other teams he names. He gets an extra 6M+ for the year and the security that he can got o a club he wants to go to if his head continues to be turned. He claims he likes it here, so I just don't understand why this obvious solution can't get done. I suspect this is what will happen unless Real come in late for him.

Yep, that's fair. I'm sure what you've said is what Levy wants. Problem is he's only got one card left to play, and that's threaten to let the guy rot in the reserves. Which would be churlish and wouldn't benefit anyone. To continue with the EU comparison, it's like No Deal, fucks everyone over, nobody wins. So, whatever the ITK is, it's down to Eriksen what he wants to do.

It's always been said he's not in it for the money. If that's the case he'll run down his contract, take the gamble on not getting a career ending injury and strike a deal with Madrid next summer. That's assuming Madrid won't stump up the cash now. The logic being it will cost Madrid the least amount of cash making it more likely they'll want to sign him.

At this point it's got very little to do with what spurs or Levy wants IMO.

If I had my heart set on going to Madrid, I wouldn't sign anything. Madrid may baulk at £60m or whatever else the release clause was.

Fair point, but at this point they have little interest so maybe lower the value to something that is reasonable to him for just that team. I just feel there has to be a compromise here. Oh, and none of this speaks to the choice at all, which frankly is a train wreck at this point and they certainly don't view him as the answer. Perhaps a new coach comes in and that changes, but it also points to what a mess they are. I don't get the feeling that Madrid will be a fun place to be this year. It says something when they don't want him to be a part of their worst side in a decade.

Eriksens first choice club is Barcelona, on every level. If he goes to RM his dream move would be over.

For those of you say we should turn down 50m and let him go free, I hope you won't be whinging next summer when we're struggling to make signings because we don't have the money.

It's shit that Eriksen wants to leave, but we're just not in the position as a club to not take 50m for a player when the alternative is zero. Next summer we're going to have to buy a RB, CB, and probably an Eriksen replacement at minimum. We absolutely need money. One season of Eriksen isn't worth mortgaging the future for. Plus we already have Lo Celso to step into his role for this season.

I 100% hope he stays and resigns but can't let sentiment overcome good sense, no player is bigger than the club.

Whatever happens Eriksen is holding a winning hand , if he goes he gets a massive wage rise like Ramsey , if he stays he gets a massive wage rise. As Uli Hoeness remarked some time ago players have all the power these days.
